Is there an app to track data usage?

Our family has iPhones through AT&T and our middle dd always pushes her data limit and had actually gone over. We look it up often, but she swears she's not using a bunch, so I'm not sure what to tell her to do differently.

So, I got thinking that maybe there's an app for that. Does anyone have any experience with an app that will actually showing what you're using the data on. For example if you're using it on Facebook, Netflix, etc. we have wifi at home, but I wonder of there's a way her phone could be using data instead of the wifi and that is causing some of her issues.

You can do it right on your phone. Settings >general>usage>cellular usage. Reset it the 1st of every month.

I don't have wifi (or any Internet) at home so I dance close to my limit every month. If she's at 2, you can upgrade to 3 for only $5/month extra, cheaper than the $10 for overage. But with wifi at home.. Unless she's using maps or streaming video all the time she shouldn't be going over.

I know this isn't going to help you any, but my phone (verizon) had something loaded on it when I bought it that tracks my usage and it is on my home page. You may go to the AT&T store and ask them if there is a free app or if the phone has a tracker on it and if they can put it on your home screen.

Tmobile has a myphone app )preloaded) that tracks all monthly info and auto resets at the billing cycle.

You should look into services that are unlimited, sprint, tmobile - they throttle so after you reach your plan, data speeds slow down, but you dont get over charged.

I run about 1.5 gigs just from my phone and another gig from mobile hot spotting for my tablet. That is decent usage, you may be correct she isnt using wifi when she is home.

AT&T does have an app. I guess it's called My AT&T... I dunno, look it up in the App Store.

You log in and can see usage by group, and also by individual phone. It is also pretty much in real time.

Check the website, I have Verizon, and they have a feature where they will send you a text message when someone reaches a certain data amount, they also have a feature which will automatically deny data use beyond her data limit.

Thanks for all the help, but I think I'm not asking my question right.

I do know how to see how much has been used, I'm trying to see where it's being used.

I can see that we are on day 6 out of 30 and she has already used 1045 of 2048 MB of data, so we are off to a really bad start this month.

I'm just trying to see if something is running in the background or what's going on because she swears she doesn't use an excessive amount.

If I could see that it's being used on the Netflix app or Facebook or ... Then I could at least advise her on what to do differently.

Facebook doesn't using much... u would have to upload A TON of photos to reach that much. It would most likely be netflix. Remember a 1.5 hour movie is around 700MB. It uses A LOT of data. I never use netflix OTA, only on wifi.

I had to upgrade my daughters data because she kept going over- the thing is that when I would check the data it would say she used a certain amount- she wouldn't even have the phone for days and if I checked again it was over. When I called they gave me a list of things to do (which I forget what it was) but all the apps were automatically updating and things were happening basically on their own using the data! I found it easier to just upgrade than keep worrying about it every month.

Check Audio/Video apps, like Pandora, iHeartRadio, Netflix, etc. These are major bandwidth users. Also make sure apps are not set to automatically update (or if so, only on wifi), and confirm that she's not downloading a lot of apps over the data network and is only doing so over wifi (while you're at it, make sure her phone is actually connecting to your at home wifi).

I'm not aware of an app that actually tracks how much data each app is consuming.

Sounds like video and app updates. You can probably shut off automatic updates and tell her to stop watching videos. If she goes over is there a way to shut it down?

Yes there is: DataMan.

It will cost you a buck and some battery juice, but it graphs your usage in real time and lets you see a process breakdown of where it is going. There are a lot of geo features in it, but you can turn those off to save battery if you like.
