free shuttle that takes you from Red Lion Hotel to the main entrance or was I mistaken?

According to Red Lion website, they use ART. The RL is route 6 stop 3.

I've read that others have walked to the Toy Story lot and used the free shuttle from Disney. I am not sure how far of a walk that is or how convenient that would be.

We have stayed at Red Lion and used the Toy Story shuttle. The walk isn't bad, it's a little closer than just walking to the park. I think we walked to the park in the morning and then took the shuttle at night when we were tired.

Where is the toy story shuttle? Is it right next door? Do they they ask for tickets or do they just let you on?

The TS shuttle is right next door, IMO it's nothing like walking to the parks, it's much much closer. We did this with no problems at all and we had a party of 11. We simply walked to the lot and then to the shuttle loading area and boarded up, they do not ask for proof of anything so if you wanted to take it to get to DTD that would work as well. Prior to doing this we asked the CM's at the lot and they told me that they had absolutely no problems with people walking in and riding the shuttles.

FYI. There can be a little bit of a wait early in the morning for the busses depending on how busy it is. Not a long one and not long enough to discourage me from staying at the red lion. The walk to the lot is very short and is way shorter than walking to the main gate.
