Is there a reason the parks are so crowded right now?

We've taken several September trips and can usually walk on all the rides. In fact, during the last September trip I don't think I needed any FP's. Is it because of CL, or is something else going on? Between the crowds and hot weather (never had that before either), I'm a little nervous about our trip this week!

I echo you curiosity on this matter. We have been coming in September for years, and this year seem markedly more crowded.

We're in the same boat; I am hoping it doesn't get over crowded in our boat ;)

We've always gone September-October and enjoyed almost walking on everything, as well.
Between all the crowded reports and Tour Plans updated their crowd predictions for the week after, I have been getting 'worried'.

I figure a combination of CL, Halloween, gay days and people catching on it's a great time to go...I am interesting in seeing what others think.

I didn't think the crowds were that bad. It was a Sunday and i believe all AP's were unblocked. I thought it would have been worse. Seemed like 10-20 min waits for a lot of rides. I'm anticipating lighter crowds during the week except for Wednesday. And since the party sold out that will probably be insane.

Now the weather on the other hand was unbearable.

Probably a lot of people waited until summer was over to check out the new DCA. Hope it starts to die down a little, but with Halloween parties coming, I won't count on it.

We didn't think wait times were too bad yesterday and we didn't get to the park until after 3pm. All lines moved pretty quickly except Splash Mountain at 8pm....I was waiting for the family and it was about an hour from start to finish.

I will say that people were a bit ruder than I have ever remembered at Disneyland.

I still know tons of local AP holders that have still not experienced CL. I know a group from church were planning on going yesterday to experience CL for the first time, but they decided to delay it a week or so due to the heat. So, I would say many locals are just starting to come out to experience CL.

Ditto AP holders wanting to see Cars Land. I wonder if they are trying to sqeeze in more visits before their AP expires. With the recent price increases I bet some will not renew.

I would say that because of the price of AP increasing so much, maybe locals with AP are trying to have as much as they can from their pass, which would mean be there more often...

AMEN AND AMEN!!!...this is EXACTLY what I predicted way at the beginning of summer..I honestly think its going to be this way (and probably worse) until after the holidays...everybody thought summer would be horrid so they all planned trips in the fall, thinking that they would be the only ones with this idea...problem is...EVERYBODY thought the same thing:rotfl2: so they all planned trips AFTER summer was over...Sept. is typically a slow month and there hasnt really been many signs of a slowdown and here we are at the end of Sept already..now that halloween is coming you take those crowds plus everybody who decided to wait till fall, then add holiday crowds plus the fact they have added 20 nights to Candlelight processional (this may not bring more people but the fact that they will all be on Main St. it will be very congested which will make the appearance of more crowds) well then you have a formula for busy, busy parks from now till Jan at least...

I agree. We were going to go in summer but I looked at crowd predictors and put our trip off til Oct. Probably stupid but too late now. Oct. is going to be almost as crowded but with short hours, no Fantasmic or fireworks on weekdays, no Indy, and Halloween parties to avoid (or splurge on). Live and learn. And ignore touringplans predictions from now on. :thumbsup2

I was sweating from 4 to the end of the night...thought it was my hormones...lol. I really ready for fall....cooler temps..and less crowding :)
Maybe I should start going on Sundays?

Our school district as many of the year round schools in AZ are out on break and then as of Saturday Sept. 29th to Oct 7 Tucson, AZ largest school District will go on fall break for the first time ever. My understanding from one of the administrators (a friend) in the district is that they are making the move slowly to becoming year round school district.

We just finished a week long trip to Disneyland this past week (9/17/12 - 9/21/12) and the parks seemed very crowded. However, I would like to point out the even though they were crowded they were deceptively crowded.

What I mean by deceptively crowded is that even though many areas of the parks were jam packed with people trying to maneuver through tight spaces the wait times for most of the rides were shockingly manageable. For instance, New Orleans Square was nearly bursting at the seams with people but the average wait time for the Haunted Mansion was about 15 minutes or so. There were times where it shot up to an hour but for the most part we got on it in less then 15 minutes even though we had to navigate the hordes just to get to the ride's entrance.

In Tomorrow Land it was quite busy as well. Trying to get from the entrance back to Space Mountain required nimble feet and quick reflexes just to avoid running into people, especially in front of Star Tours. However, the wait times for Space Mountain seemed to hover right around 15-30 minutes the whole week we were there. What was really surprising was that when Space Mountain was packed Star Tours was practically empty and vice versa. It was quite nice to be able to deviate from Space Mountain to Star Tours while waiting for the hordes of people to get off of the ride.

In California Adventure most of the people seemed to congregate in Cars Land which left the rest of the park almost empty. Several of the rides had 10 minute or less wait times the entire week. We spent hours at Pacific Wharf just going between the various rides over and over. In fact, we were allowed to stay seated on 'Mickey's Silly Symphony Swings' five times in a row because there was nobody in line. We were also able to ride 'Goofy's Sky School' three times in a row without getting off because there was nobody in line. Regardless, 'Radiator Springs Racers', 'Toy Story Midway Mania' and 'Luigi's Flying Tires' always seemed to be flirting with 60 minute wait times.

Another ride that I was surprised was so easy to get on was 'Tow Mater's Junkyard Jamboree'. I don't think we waited more then 10 minutes each time we rode it. In fact, I believe most of our wait times were right around 5 minutes or so. The 'Tower of Terror' was also surprisingly easy to get on. The wait times seemed to fluctuate between 15 and 30 minutes the whole week we were there. We rode it 4 times with less then 10 minute wait times.

Overall, we had a great experience with this trip and were able to manage the crowds very well. Not once did I get stressed out about the wait times or not being able to ride a particular ride. Maybe it was because we decided to use a 'path of least resistance' method when selecting which rides to wait for or maybe it was the fact that we just accepted the fact that we might not be able to ride certain multiple times. Regardless, we didn't paint ourselves into a corner with a predetermined plan and just rode the rides that the crowds (or lack of) dictated we ride. If we were on our way to Splash Mountain and we saw that 'Pirates of the Caribbean' had a less then 5 minute wait we deviated from our plan and took advantage of that particular ride.

this is typical period! regardless of the time of year..TL and AL are so compact that it takes no time at all before it gets like that...and as far as DCA goes...what you are saying seems to be the general consensus..

That's good to know. We also are fine with just zigging while everyone else zags. ::yes::

Thank you for posting that. We are veteran DL'ers and know how to navigate popular times and rides, so we'll just go in with the knowledge we have and not stress. Honestly, I am so looking forward to the trip that I think it will be fine once we get there! :)

I am fairly worried about the crowds for my October 10-13 trip. I frequent these boards a lot, but have only been to Disney a few times, so I don't have a lot of experience. I am very afraid that the crowds are going to make my trip unenjoyable :(

Don't stress out or over think the situation. If you're this worried about it then you might be setting yourself up for disappointment. Just go with the flow and take what the parks and crowds give you. Follow the path of least resistance and take advantage of the attractions that are left vacant due to the hordes of people mobbing the more popular rides.

Now, please note that I'm not advocating not having a plan but don't be too stubborn in changing that plan on a second's notice. For example, we wanted to ride 'Splash Mountain' so we started making our way over to that part of the park. As we passed the 'Haunted Mansion' we noticed that the people were walking right up to the foyer so we changed our 'Splash Mountain' plan and promptly walked right into the 'Haunted Mansion'; even though we had already ridden it multiple times at that point.

As a 41 year old adult, was I bored with the 'Haunted Mansion' after riding it so many times? Yes, I was. However, for my 5 year old son, he was completely enthralled with the idea of riding it again. It simply didn't matter that we had already ridden it a half dozen times or so. As a result, after I've had time to relax and revisit the experience I have to say I wouldn't change a thing. Seeing my son's face and hearing him ooh and aah was worth the extra rides on "Haunted Mansion'.
