I have a child who is super interested in following news stories, particularly the national stories of murder cases. Not interested in the gruesome side of it (won't watch scary movies or anything). Does a job exist for someone like this?

What about the stories is interesting to him?

There are numerous possibilities depending on what part he would like to play as stories of interest unfold.

Not clear if you mean he is interested in finding a job where he can make money or just something to do as a hobby. You didn't mention how old he is, but being an intern (if still in h.s. for example) at a news/media organization can provide some exposure to how that all works. Not sure I would consider it a job to start some website or be active on social media. Those seem to be more in the hobby category to me.

I was just thinking of it as a segway into it. It would not doubt get them talking to others in the field, and if they want to complete an actual course of study, and take advantage of things like internships that come along with that, they can. Or they could get a job at a local station doing whatever and work their way into a different job, maybe.

I don't know what you mean by having a job that follows national murder stories. Even reporters will tell you that you don't just graduate with a journalism degree, and go right to covering national news issues. I know some podcasters dive into famous murder cases, and a few of them can even make a living at it, but for most, it's a passion. A few make a side hustle out of it, but only a tiny, tiny percentage actually make a living doing it. And they put in TONS of behind-the-scenes research for every hour that they broadcast.

Your child needs to find something more lucrative to keep food on the table if this is his planned goal. Even journalism these days has way more qualifies people than there are jobs (look at how newspapers are dying, for example, and network news is a shell of what it used to be).

yeah I was hoping there was something behind the scenes that I don't know about.

Law Enforcement tends to get messy but the child might grow into it. If staying away from gore is permanent then Law Enforcement for financial crimes and white collar might be a thing you child grows up and into. There are corporate jobs in businesses like Pharma which self regulate quite a bit and that pays well while generally avoiding the messy stuff.

Forensic Accountant maybe?

I would suggest Plan B for their career and income generator then make their main hobby following along crimes, perhaps some writing (can take some writing classes online where you learn how to submit stories), as said above make their own social media channel where they follow crimes, do their own research on the internet. With enough followers they can generate some nice side income. Maybe even explore writing their own crime novels. As someone who read Nancy Drew at young age ... it would have been cool if there was a middle school level of similar stories.

Bottom line if they don't like the gore part of murder crime then I don't see how they find a niche in that industry directly.
