Is there a difference between Rice Milk and Lactaid Milk?

OP here again. Thanks for all the replies. I may see about finding a pediatric allergist. Our main symptom/problem with her is that she is VERY restless almost every night. Maybe one night a week she sleeps pretty well-still restless at some point everynight, but not as bad. She cries in her sleep and sits up off and on, but doesnt always wake completely up. She seems to be having something bother her. The doctor thinks she may be in a pattern of waking and part of this is habit or her wanting us to get her. Well, since she sleeps with us anyway and she doesnt wake up fully and want us to hold her or comfort her I dont think that is it. She was diagonsed with Reflux at 2 weeks and it on Previcid. At her last checkup a couple of weeks ago she had the blood test for the milk allergy and like I said that one came back negative, but her bloodwork did show her to be anemic. She is supposed to take Poly ViSol once a day until her 15 month checkup. Im thinking it may be an extreme sensitivity like Mouse House Mama suggested. I am trying the whole milk lactaid, and she had 4 oz yesterday, but a rough night on top of it. Guess I will try it for a few days and see if things get better or worse. I do worry about her nutrition as she is very tiny for her age too. She was 16lbs, 12 oz at her one year checkup (2nd percentile). Now with the anemia on top of that I do worry about her getting everything she needs. Thanks for the suggestions and hopefully things will get better soon:worship:

My son also was all over the place at night. They were going to test him for apnea. Once the dairy was out of his diet he slept like a log and no longer was all over the bed. We know it is related. If we are a little lax in his diet and he has dairy (a piece of regular pizza) he has a bad night's sleep. I do agree that you need to speak to someone to make sure she has a great diet. Good luck!

Try to find an allergist that specializes in food allergies. For lots of information, resources, etc.... check our FAAN (Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network) http://www.foodallergy.org/

Good luck! I hope you find the right answers soon for yours and your daughters sake! :goodvibes

There's no way I would have a child who only weighed 16# at 1, on any kind of 'milk', they should be on formula IMO. We use Neocate for Ilana for a little while longer (she's almost 2 and can go off it then) and Evan was on it till 2 as well. At 1 they couldn't have milk, soy, egg, wheat, nuts, fish, etc, at 1 Evan was only allowed formula and white rice, he was 18# and was 24# at 2! :cool1: Ilana is down to just milk/egg free and I think it's eggs that are the big problem still, not milk (though she's never had milk, just milk in things). Neocate formula is a complete formula and they have several toddler formulas if she could handle the 30cal/oz. Evan couldn't handle the 30 till he was 22#, so we started that at 19 mos. He stayed on the 20 cal infant kind till then, again, complete nutrition if they get enough of it and no matter how much they get, better than anything else they could drink.

The sleeping issues remind me of 1) Evan's reflux, he was on meds till 21 mos and 2) his apnea issues. He just had his tonsils out over the summer (he's almost 4) and he's doing loads better and gaing some weight! He's about 32# now, so 3.5# in 2 mos. That's over a years worth of gain for him! He had terrible apnea that made him sleep just awful.

While I respect your opinion that is a blanket statement and does not fit all. Some children are smaller than others. They are not unhealthy. I personally would not give my child (toddler) formula. At that age they can eat a balanced diet. While your situation is different, it doesn't make it the only answer. Did you see an allergist or was this what your ped prescribed? I am glad your children are doing better but nothing is one size fits all.

We have a ped, an allergist, and had a GI.

No, a child who is 16# at 1 isn't necessarily unhealthy, but most children at age 1 IMO aren't capable of eating a balanced daily diet (or won't) and if they can't have dairy they are going to be missing a lot calcium and fat and protein if they are not still being bf. Even my bigger son was almost 25# at 1, went to rice milk and I regret it. We did add protein powder and olive oil to his milk, but IME there are better options for a child who is milk allergic/intolerant. My kids are different b/c at age 1, they were at LEAST milk, soy, and egg intolerant so this will of course flavor my opinion.

My DS is 2.5 and can seem to eat dairy products throughut the day but if he eats it right before bed, he is up screaming in pain with gas and cramping? :confused3 We have stopped giving him dairy before bed and we just started giving him a glass of soy milk before bed and he is now sleeping great (I say this as knocking on wood as to not jinx this!!!!). I've read that some children can have normal dairy products as they are easier to digest than milk? And just not have milk???

I can see where you are coming from. It is so hard when your kids are not feeling well. It took us a while to figure out what was triggering so many things in our son. I am glad your kids are doing better. Thank God we have so many options now a days.:cutie:

For any Canadians who are reading this thread, Canada does NOT use added hormones on our dairy cows. Our restrictions and laws are MUCH stricter than the ones in the U.S.

Soy milk is NOT recommended here for girls especially, but anyone in general. There is an ingredient in soy (of any variety) that mimics human estrogen, therefore causing issues in SOME children.

This is a strangely bumped up old thread....

But the problem with cow milk is that it intrinsically has hormones in it. That's the problem with it and the whole point of avoiding it (along with other reasons).

It's also the issue the dairy industry has when places say that their brand is "xyz free"...it's that it's NOT free of hormones, as cows put their own bodymade hormones into milk.

Hope the OP's now 2ish year old is doing well!

I'm going through something similar, not sleeping well for months now, in pain. I tried the lactaid and it wasn't any better either. I'm doing the enriched rice milk. My daughter is on Zantac for reflux and had a huge problem with milk and some other things. She even lost weight at her last checkup. My peditrician wasn't being very helpful so after months and months I went to a gastroentrologist/nutrionist. He thinks its allergies so I'm off to an allergist next week!

sorry I just commented didn't realize it was so old. I suppose the child is almost 2 now like the other poster said!
