I have an 8 yr old that my mom is having a fit that I am taking on a cruise.. she is afraid he will fall over.. yes very silly, but then I read about the older couple disappearing (and presumably falling over board)..

Should I be concerned? :confused3

As the mother of an 8 year old son, we have cruised DCL before.... I am not worried! Unless your child has springs for legs :bounce: , or you think he/she might try to climb over the rails, I wouldn't be concerned. If I remember correctly, and someone will correct me if I wrong... :teeth: ..... Most of the railings have plexiglass in front of them, so that there are not any bars that your child could crawl through, just over.... :cheer2: Just go and have a fantastic cruise!!!!

No worries. The railings all have plexiglass on the inside, so kids cannot climb up them. With normal parental supervision, you should have no problems. I've not heard of anyone on a DCL ship falling overboard accidentally.

... Just a teenager that jumped off the ship while docked in St. Thomas.

Most of the balcony railings are shielded with plexiglass (not so on the aft staterooms, which are solid), but even so the view through the glass is a bit unclear, and our DD5 often wanted a better view of things. I noticed her looking at the small plastic table on the balcony, and I had to advise her very sternly that under no circumstances was she permitted to try to stand on that table or either of the chairs to get a better view over the railing.

As Lloyd suggested, if you're supervising your children I cannot imagine any problems -- I definitely wouldn't leave "little climbers" out there alone for any length of time.

That advice goes for the rest of the ship as well -- I could be wrong, but don't think the promenade along Deck 4 has the plexiglass, and those railings could easily be climbed in just a few seconds by a child. The railings along deck 10 up are much higher, so they wouldn't be a problem.

I understand your concern! It's good to be aware. We were on the Magic in January of 2005. We practiced a 2 feet on the ground rule at all times while on our verandah, and near the railing. My DD was 5 at the time, and my son turned 9 on the trip. I do have to say, at night when they stack the deck loungers, be certain that they are pulled away from the edge. I caught my 9 year old (who, yes, is bright, but saw an opportunity to get a better look over the side :confused3 ) climbing the stacked chairs that had been pushed to the railing. Needless to say, I freaked out on him.... and he NEVER did it again...... I did tell a few crew members that didn't seem too concerned..... So, to make a long story short.... just be careful at night when you are up on deck enjoying a party that the stacked chairs haven't been pushed over to the railing!!!! :sad2:

I believe Deck 4 does have the plexiglass....in the link below I can see in the pic that there is a reflection of the light on the railing which I am pretty sure is the plexiglass.

Yes, deck 4 does have plexiglass. I remember seeing CMs cleaning it!
