Is the mushroom soup at Artist's Point vegetarian?

I just ate there with my best friend, who is a vegetarian. Before we went, I checked out the menu and actually found a vegetarian food blogger who raved about the soup, so I told my friend she was safe eating it.

It's fantastic, but I kept thinking that I was tasting bacon. When I got home, I found what was supposedly the recipe online and it didn't have bacon, but it had chicken broth!

Does anyone know if this is the truth? I hate that I told a vegetarian something didn't have meat when it did. And she really, really liked that soup!

Also, in the future, if you let the restaurant know in advance that there will be a vegan dining and that the person will be ordering the mushroom soup, they can probably make it with vegetable stock. But keep in mind it contains cream no matter what, which is still an animal product, so...

Thanks. I didn't even think about calling in advance. I will next time. She does eat dairy, just not any meat, which I guess includes chicken stock.

These soups are made in large batches.

you were tasting was actually from the smoked shtake (please place the "i" where appropriate, if I put it in the word, the obsenity filter here bleeps it out!!) mushrooms that they use on the top as a garnish. They actually do taste like bacon. I don't know if the recipe uses chicken stock or not. Our server told us it was vegetarian, but I didn't ask to confirm this with the chef, as we are total carnavours!

If it's any help, I think the word is actually spelled with a double "i" - shiitake :) Seriously. I'm not trying to avoid any word filters.

eta: Yes. I just checked dictionary.com, and the single "i" version is not even listed as an alternative spelling.

Yes BUT Disney is excellent at accommodating special dietary needs. With advance notice, I'm sure they can make a completely vegetarian serving. It may not taste EXACTLY the same, but it will be danged close.

The recipe was printed in a recent issue of the DVC member magazine. There is no bacon, but there is chicken stock.
As to requesting it made with vegetable stock, I would not count on it. My DH is a chef...a stock takes the better part of a day to make. As a signature restaurant, I would hope that Artist Point makes their own stocks.

Thanks for the information, everyone. I will call ahead next time. It can't hurt to try, but it's probably asking too much. I almost wish I hadn't asked, then she could enjoy it guilt-free!

That' so funny. And they have a meaty texture, too.
