Is the luau at RPR worthwhile?

Just wondering - we spoke with friends who stayed at RPR and were NOT impressed with the restaurants there (they said the Portofino casual restaurant was great however!) I am very interested in the luau at RPR, where we hope to be staying for 2 or 3 nights next summer. Our kids will be 9 and 3 when we go. Is the luau really all that, or would we better off with a nice dinner at one of the CityWalk restaurants (or a night at DTD)? Is the entertainment portion really great or is it all about the food?

Thanks for any input...

I heard the luau was good, not great entertainment. Mousesavers has a review of it, if you want to read it from the mousesavers website. We diid the Seaworld one. The entertainment was awesome, but my kids (older than yours) did not like the food that much. I thought some was good, and some was not my taste. Very nice waitress too.

My wife and I did the Luau a couple years ago with my parents. It was the first time for my parents, but the second time for DW and I. I liked it as both the entertainment and food were good. I doubt that I'll see it a third time though. The setup is similar to Hawaiian luaus, where guests sit at long tables with other guests, and food is served buffet style. We were fortunate that our table was next to the stage, so we had good seats. I suggest seeing it if you haven't previously.

As for the RPR restaurants, there aren't too many choices: Emeril's Tchoup Chop, Islands Dining Room, Jake's American Bar, The Bula Bar at the pool, plus the Orchid Court Lounge and Sushi Bar. I haven't tried either The Bula Bar or the Orchid Court Lounge, but I've heard good reviews of the Bula Bar. I like both Emeril's Tchoup Chop and Jake's American Bar. However Tchoup Chop is expensive, while Jake's doesn't open until 4pm. I've also dined at Islands, but only for their breakfast buffet, which although good, it is expensive.

Ironically, other than Sal's at PBH, I like RPR's restaurants better than PBH's restaurants. Of course, I haven't tried BICE which is on my to do list. I heard good reviews of Mama Della's, but I was disappointed in the food when we finally dined there. Also, a couple years ago, the breakfast buffet at Trattoria del Porto wasn't open some mornings. Hopefully, they've changed that so that it's open every morning. As for Sal's, they have very good pizza at a reasonable price, and I wouldn't hesitate eating there again.

Thanks to you both...I checked out that Mousesavers review and it sounds like the one at Sea World is our go-to. The entertainment was great, the food was good (he did say the food at RPR was better), and best of all, it's less expensive than RPR to begin with, PLUS we will be able to get 30% off because we'll have APs for the Busch parks. :cool1:

The luau at the RPR is terrific-food was delicious and beautifully presented-entertainment is run of the mill Haiwaiian show, but it's under a roof,so weather is not an issue. We enjoyed it tremendously!

the luau at rph is totally worth it.

it is held on saturday nights.

it was the next best thing to the Germaine luau in hawaii.

The Islands Dining room at RPR has a brand new menu. My son ate there last week and said it was very good. The Bula Bar (poolside) has excellent food. The burgers are delicious -- I think the best at the whole Universal Resort -- and the salads are huge and great. I haven't eaten at Jakes in ages, so I can't comment there.
