Is the forward part of the ship really much rougher?

Hello all, this is a great place to get questions answered for 1st time cruisers like ourselves. We have secured a forward cabin on deck 7 .. rm 7550 on the Fantasy. From looking at the deck plan it is clearly in the front 3rd of the ship (not ALL the way front though). Is the forward part of the ship really notice movement more than the rear and middle? Obviously the farther away from the center the worst as far as movement goes (and the higher the worst) .. but on such a big ship is it really THAT noticeable? Thanks

I always thought the front was less rough. I guess I think about a bus. If you sit near the front it's less bumpy then the back. :confused3

We were all the way Aft in our first Disney Cruise and it was rough, rough, rough. Also when docking in port the whole room would vibrate lol. So for our upcoming 2013 cruise we are all the way forward.

It is better to be Mid-ship and low to the waterline for the least movement. We were joking on the Wonder the first night that we "found out what makes the Wonder move" 12-18 ft waves from the bridge report. It is noticeable on big ships. I have gone to the top deck all the way forward on the Wonder and the Dream after dinner the first night and was amazed both nights how much more you could feel the movement.

Mid ship is definitely where you feel the least movement of the ship. Think of the ship as a teeter totter (or see saw - whichever you call it). The ends move the most and as you get more to the middle of it, there is less movement.

With that being said, the ships do have great stabalizers, but I know that in really big waves, you can feel the motion on the ship, with the most at each end of the ship.

We had very rough waves coming home from our first cruise in 2008 (there was a big storm heading up the Eastern seaboard) and we were having a few issues walking to our room (midship) because of the movement. BUT...that was a good test of us as no one got sick! :goodvibes

Even though we survived the big waves (and had more on our next cruise on the first night), we still choose to have our room mid-ship for the least amount of movement.

We were all the way forward on our July Dream cruise and I didn't notice a thing!

You experience something called pitching on the front of any ship. When a ship goes up against a swell it has to drop back down into the ocean because of gravity. If in bad seas it can feel like an elevator going up and down really fast. If I were you I would stay on the level your on but try and move midship or aft, there's much less motion there.

So far, I like forward more than aft.

We stayed in 6514 on the Dream, which is more forward than your room and I liked it a lot more than the aft rooms we've stayed in. I really didn't feel a lot of movement. We were sleeping in our room and I noticed the hangers clanging on the last night, but it wasn’t as rough as the aft rooms we’ve stayed in before.

Now, my DD was in the Vibe, which is all the way forward on the Dream/Fantasy and she said the ship moved A LOT the last night and they had trouble standing up. I really didn’t notice it that much where we were asleep.

I think your room is in between mid and forward elevators, so it’s not that far forward. You should be fine.

We have been in the aft for all 3 of our cruises, and I must say we will not stay in the aft again, our last cruise it was SO rough..Lesson leared, stay mid-ship

I'm the queen of motion sickness in cars, small boats, and rides. Never had a problem forward on the ship.

We had a really rough time on our cruise. We were all the way forward (#9010) and we really felt it. We did have some rough weather so not sure if it was just that but my youngest son and I both had to take meds.

YES, you feel much more motion forward. We were on a really smooth cruise a few years ago and had been upgraded to a suite, in the very front of the ship. I hesitated (knowing my motion issues) but decided I wanted the suite more! Most of the cruise was great, but the last day we hit some currents that made the ship move a lot more. It was BAD! I was sick, but I can get sick pretty easily. My dh and our friends were all sick too and they NEVER have issues. That evening I stayed in the cabin and they went to the dining room (midship) they said it was a HUGE difference. They didn't feel bad at all when they were midship. I will NEVER get a cabin that far forward again! I am a little anxious, when we booked this cruise the only 3 cabins together were pretty far forward (maybe 1/3 of the way from the front) so that is were we are. I'm hoping it won't be bad.

We took our first cruise last month, and I felt WAY more motion when we were aft. It didn't matter what deck either. We had room 7514 on the Wonder, which is the first room forward of the forward elevators. Mind you, we had incredibly smooth seas, but I only noticed motion in our room on the very last night when we were booking it back to LA. I wouldn't want to be the most forward cabin, but would love to sail in the same area again.

Been on Magic and Wonder forward, midship, and aft. Sailed on the Dream very forward. From my experiences Aft on the Magic and Wonder were very rough and loud. Forward on Magic and Wonder were smooth and quite. Last October was on the Dream in very forward 7518 and never felt the ship move and never heard the thrusters or any other ship noise. For me forward has been great experiences with less motion and little to no noise and I get motion sick very easy.

did you take any medication? did it help at all?

we're going to be very far forward on the dream, as that's where the suites are. I hope we'll be ok!!

The Dream and the Fantasy handle the ocean much better than the Wonder and Magic. I stayed forward on the Dream and didn't have any problems at all.

I am a little nervous about our upcoming cruise - we are on the Wonder, in room 5508 - that seems pretty forward to me...
I am hoping its a nice gentle rocking that we feel, and nothing worse. This will be cruise#6 w/Disney, and we have never been this far forward.

Hopefully all will be well. :)

Lizzy'sMom- we were in 8008 on the Wonder alst spring break & did not have a prob at all. In fact we liked the location so much that we chose 8000 for our trip in June. Try not to worry!

I've also noticed we felt very little movement on the Bahamas cruises (Dream/Wonder) vs. the Eastern Caribbean (Magic/Fantasy). I think there’s a lot of just floating around on the Bahamas cruises (especially on the double-dip). On the Eastern, they have to go fast to get there and there is a lot more ship movement. On our Eastern we are going to move more mid-ship.

You guys have me terrified! The DCL CM that I booked my trip with stated the AFT was the best area for least amount of movement. I said I had heard mid-ship he said no, AFT is better. I have never in my life cruised and took his word for it, now reading all of this I am terrified that we will regret being here. What's a girl to do? We have room #9662 on the Dream in May.
