Is the Dream unsinkable?

Sailing on the Dream on 15 Sept and have been thinking about sailing into the storm.

With all the modern technology, is the Dream unsinkable? In the movie Poseidon Adventure, a rogue wave capsized the ship and she sunk. Pretty sure they have radars to detect such phenomena and could turn into the wave. Be a heck of a ride but you would not roll. If the ship did 'roll', would it right itself or would it remain upside down? No idea. I'd hate to be in the AquaDuck when she rolled and be trapped in a tube 90' underwater! :-)

Assuming all "systems" (engines, electrical, pumps, navigation, etc) are functioning I cannot think of how a hurricane could sink the Dream. If nothing else, the ship could outrun or flank the worst of the storm.

Thoughts? Opinions? Fact?
No, the Dream is not unsinkable. Hopefully, it won't sink during your cruise.

Certainly under the right circumstances she could sink....we saw that a few years ago with the Concordia.

Although not due to being overwhelmed by a wave. Any ship can sink, but it's a lot more likely to do so when there's a hole in it like the Concordia had. Going back to the original posting about the Poseidon Adventure, I believe that, with today's stabilizing technology, a ship would have to list very very far in order to overturn it due to a wave. And that wave would have to be much larger than what supposedly hit in the movie, although I must admit I don't recall how large it was supposed to be or how large the ship was supposed to be (original or remake) but I suspect a bit of liberty was taken with physics. In reality I'd be more concerned with damage to windows and injuries due to falling or flying objects than overturning in high waves.

Thoughts like what? Sinking? I would consider that the adventure of a lifetime! I would have loved to have been on the Concordia when she sunk. I mean how many people can say they've been on a sinking cruise ship?! We've been on about 15 cruises and nothing 'exciting' has ever happened....never been a fire or set adrift with no power, never been in a bad storm or even had to change course or ports of call. I think the closest we ever came was in Stockholm when we had to change our departure time from the port so we didn't get stuck when low tide came.

I can safely say that being evacuated from my cabin by a 'fireman' into a smoke filled corridor while out in the middle of the ocean was far from an adventure and downright terrifying. Going upstairs to work and having to use my body to hold beeping fire screen doors open for nearly an hour was exhausting. Standing there picturing us out in life rafts watching the ship burn and lose most of my possessions...yeah, not something I would wish on anyone or want to go through again. Luckily everything was sorted and we just smelt of smoke for a while. But sinking, a major fire, grounding, no thanks - you can take that one for the team.

Say, what, now? I haven't heard about this. What happened, bbel?

It was back when I first started, so forever ago now haha! It was nothing really major. Just the smoke funnelled up into one crew area, where my cabin was, where I was on break. Freaked me out when the guy came to my room because no announcement had been made (it was made just I was leaving my room), but I had to go and report to work. Standard practice in YA is to prepare for evac, and the fire screen doors automatically want to close and it was my job to hold them open.
Ive been through quite a few red-parites but this one lasted the longest, but did the least damage. Guests would have heard the announcement but after that it didn't effect them at all and everything carried on. To the point that I had one guest yelling at me because I wouldn't let his kid in at that time (kids can only check out after an announcement until the all clear), so no guest has probably spoken about it because they don't even know it happened lol. It was really quiet so I want to say it was on a longer/repo cruise, but I cant quite remember, if Im honest, there were so many around that time lol. Its just this was the only one I had 'seen' so standing there, waiting to get the all clear I think I was just picturing the worst lol, usually when they happened I was already at work and they were just an inconvenience.

Oh, that's a good point about the 'stabilizer' fins. I know it was speculation but in the movie (based on real life) The Perfect Storm showed waves so big it flipped their boat end-over-end!

I'm always amazed when we do life boat drills and marvel at how many people the plan to cram into those boats. Think how long it takes to load a tender (same boats). And that is with calm people not scared and panicky people. Only two three things I can imagine a cruise ship sinking. 1. Run aground or hit something like the Concordia 2. Out of control fire that that cannot be contained 3. Torpedo - like from a terrorist or hostile government ala the Lusitania

That would be a scary situation. Glad to hear it turned out well, though.

I think you need help very badly. If your looking for disaster to strike while on a cruise. Sounds sick to me...

I think I was more upset because I'd just bought a new iPad a few days before and hadn't even had chance to get it out the box and I just had visions of it sinking to the bottom of the ocean lol!
I obviously have my priorities right haha!

I think you may be taking the wrong kind of vacations.

Here's the story of the New Carissa - which ran aground on the Oregon coast in 1999 (wow lot longer ago than I thought). The link takes you to the middle of the article - after the ship was classified as a shipwreck (un-salvageable NO LONGER Seaworthy).

Short story:
  • The Navy placed 180kg of Plastic explosives and 2280 liters of naplam in the ship in order to burn off the remaining fuel onboard
  • The ship eventually broke into two halves
  • The bow halve was floated and towed 50 miles out into the Pacific before the tow line broke and it ended up back on the Oregon coast
  • Was re floated and towed out 280 miles where the Navy placed 400 pounds of High Explosives onboard and detonated it
  • Then 69 rounds of gunfire from a Navy destroyer turned the hull into swiss cheese. 40 minutes later it was still afloat
  • Finally a Navy Submarine torpedoed it and then in took another 10 minutes to sink
And after all of that I NEVER worried about a cruise ship sinking again - until the Costa Concorida - but I still don't worry about it because no way would DCL hire someone so stupid as master of the ship.

I'm open to suggestions.

See below

When/if you find a ship that promises to run 30+ foot seas let me know. Bigger the seas the better. Hubby & I will go with you. We WANT to be in extreme seas. I've actually spent time researching how to increase my chances (ie. paying to ride freighters certain routes at particular times of year). We want that ride. I hear my dad talking about seas so huge the ship (Navy vessels, mostly destroyers & cruisers) would stand on end riding up & back down. He talks about his first time, how he believed that was the end for him....being thrown from your bunk....and as years went by watching the youngsters lay in the floor crying for their mothers. Yeah. I WANT that. Crazy. I know. So if you ever find that boat with that ride, do let me know. I'm in.

The Aqua Duck is closed anytime the winds are deemed too strong, even if the overall weather is good. They take no chances with that. We had fine weather on our Fantasy cruise, but the Aqua Duck was closed for 2 of the sea days due to "high winds". It was not hurricane season or even any kind of storm.

Join the Navy.

This is ridiculous....Yes the Dream, Fantasy, Wonder and Magic are "sinkable".
On the other hand, the Captain, under most circumstances, will NEVER risk putting the ship (a mega million, if not billion capital investment) or the passengers in danger.
Period, end of story. The itinerary is really just a suggestion at that point. Western/Eastern...does not matter...the show must go on unless it is clear no other options exist. its all about ship and passenger safety.
The ship will NOT sail into the teeth of a storm just to satisfy an itinerary .
If you are allowed to get on, you have nothing to worry about. Well, unless, the Captain is Jack Sparrow.
