I am planning a trip to DLR with my family. I want to stay in a hotel that has a waterslide and is close to DL (walk there). Is Disneyland Hotel worth the price?

Thanks!

If you have young kids (like 5 and under) who can't swim on their own without a life jacket, then they won't be able to use the main waterslide at the Disneyland Hotel, and they don't allow the kids to wear life jackets on the slides at the Disneyland Resort Hotels. (The lifeguards make younger kids take a little swim test before letting them go down the slide.....nothing major......as long as they can dog paddle their way around then they'll be fine.) Otherwise, the Disneyland Hotel is a great place to stay! Their pool is great, they have a huge hot tub, pretty grounds, they have a really nice quiet pool, it's about a 3-4 minute walk to the DTD monorail station, and a nice stroll through DTD and the Grand Californian to get to California Adventure. Our room was plenty big, and had a sofa that could fold down into a twin bed, but a few rooms don't have a sofa and are smaller than the one we had. Make sure to request a room with a sofa......it's just a request, but one I would make.

If you do have younger kids who can't swim on their own, then the only water slides they can use is the one at the Paradise Pier Hotel (which has a great slide and the longest in the area), or the slides at the Howard Johnson's new "Castaway Cove" water play area.

Both are great hotels (we've stayed at both a few times) with large rooms, and walking distance to the gates of the parks are about the same (although the Paradise Pier is only about a 5 minute walk to the Downtown Disney Monorail Station, which takes you right into Tomorrowland in Disneyland).

Have fun wherever you stay!:yay:

(Here's a link to the Howard Johnson's photo gallery/web site if you're not familiar with the hotel.)

Thank you so much for the awesome reply! I'm also thinking about Sheraton. Do you know anything about that hotel?

We are also going down to San Diego for a couple of nights, so I have to check out hotels there as well. I'd love to stay at the Hard Rock but over $300 a night - and we need 2 rooms, one for my mom, so that one is out!

Thanks again!

There's a couple of Sheraton hotels close to Disneyland, but none have waterslides. Other than the Disneyland Resort Hotels, the only other hotel in the area with a waterslide is the Howard Johnson.

I've never stayed at any of the Sheraton hotels because they're really not within walking distance. I believe they do have their own private shuttles to and from Disneyland, but we like stay where it's an easy 5-10 minute walk to/from the parks. They get good reviews though.

Have fun in San Diego. They have great beaches down there, and some NICE golf courses (according to my family of golfers, which I'm not one - haha).....and of course there's Sea World and the San Diego Zoo.

The Howard Johnsons has slides? The one on Katella(I think it's Katella) right by the I-5 freeway? We stayed there several years ago and really liked the hotel but it was starting to show it's age. Are we speaking of the same one? If not, which one are you talking about? I'm thinking about a DL trip some time this spring when my oldest is still away at college and we can sneak DD down there for a few days, I know, mean aren't I ;)

It is on Harbor, and Yes. Check out the link above for the gallery of photos. The new water play area opened this past summer. It is pretty spectacular. We were there in December and it was cold, we couldn't keep my 12 year old away. My DH even tried it out.

Thanks for the input - when we were there last about 7 years ago we had one of the bottom floor rooms with the small balcony right over the hot tub. We really enjoyed the location. I'll go check out the photos - thanks for the correction on the street. We lived down there many moons ago and I remember that Ball, Katella and Harbor are all involved I can just never remember where they all are;)

The DL hotel also has a small slide for the little, little kids. My 4 an 2 year old love it! You can catch them at the bottom.

We typically stay at either the DL hotel or Hojo's. I like walking through DT disney to get to DL for the atmosphere and I like the pool but otherwise it's hard to justify on-site if the price is too much higher. HoJo's is about the same distance to walk and because we have strollers we don't do the monorail much (gotta love that walk down mainstreet in the morning anyway)!

The first time we stayed on-site we had a huge room but the 2 times after our rooms were tiny! HoJo has nice big rooms and can't wait to check out the new play area! I was looking at entertainment rates in Feb at $59/night. Can't beat that!

Is HoJos really nice? I like nice hotels but don't like to pay high prices for them. What is HoJos' like? Clean, but of course not luxury?

Yes, HOJOs is nice. :thumbsup2 We have stayed there 4 times within the last year! It is certainly clean and all the Disney Facing rooms in Bldg 1 have new beds which are very very comfy. From what I understand most of Bldg 2 has been upgraded but not all. You would just need to request the new beds.
They also have the great Ent Card rate which can't be beat!

Okay, I am new here, what is the Entertainment Card???

The Entertainment Coupon book (www.entertainment.com). When you buy the book you get a card in the front. You just need to have this card when checking in to get the ent. rate at HOJOs. You do not need the Anaheim area book, any area is fine. You also don't need to have it to book the room, only for check-in. They only have in available on certain nights of the year but they are usually adding nights at the last minute. (http://www.hojoanaheim.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=14 )
And make sure to call the local in-house reservations (# is on the above link). The national HOJO reservations won't be able to get you the good rates.
HTH! :thumbsup2

I would honestly say that the DL Hotel and HoJo's are about the same level of luxury except that the DL Hotel has on-site restaurants and room service. HoJo's does not, but Mimi's is right across the street and several other restaurants are walking distance.

I see from your signature where you have stayed at WDW. We stayed at CBR on our first trip there and I would say both hotels are about on par with the moderates at WDW except again the lack of services at HoJo's but you have to keep in mind that you have a host of things within walking distance including downtown disney even from HoJo's. We just recently stayed at the Beach Club and there are no hotels within walking distance that compare with that except I would imagine that the Grand Californian is maybe on par (but haven't stayed there). If you are willing to shuttle, you could do maybe a sheraton or hilton that is pretty close.

We just find that with a 3 or 4 day trip we spend a couple of hours a day at the pool and other than that, we just sleep in our hotel so not worth a ton of extra money. I think you'll find HoJo's clean, comfortable and convenient. Just make sure you are not on the freeway side if noise bothers you. It's not terrible to us, but I know it bothers some people.

I would say this was true if you were in one of the smaller rooms at DLH. This last time we had a room that was very average for a hotel. It was in the Magic Tower (room 2508). Last time though, we had a bigger room that had the couch. That was in the Dreams Tower. That room felt a little "newer" too (perhaps more recently renovated).

If there's a big price difference, HoJo's is the way to go (we've stayed there too). But we'll spurge for DLH when there's not as drastic a price difference. This last trip the Ent. rate wasn't available at HoJo's so while we still payed a chunk more for DLH, it was worth it to us. We just love it there and spend more time in the room now that we have a little one again. :cutie:

Yes, we have a 4 month old now - who will be 7 mos when we travel. We will be spending more time in the room. It will be 3 nights I think we should go with the DLH -- more expensive for sure but I think the convenience will be worth it. Is it walking distance to the park or dtd? Or do you have to take a monorail? Is it themed like WDW resorts? I like to feel away from freeways and things when I vacation. Does it have that feeling of being in Disney and away from everyday life, so to speak?

Thanks so much to everyone for helping!!! :)

If feeling removed and "only in Disney" is important to you, then you should definitely stay at DLH and it's better walking distance than HoJo's (and more fun!) Each room has the magic Disney touch and yes, you just still feel like you're in Disneyland when you're there! :wizard:

Stay in either the Dreams (1st choice) or the Magic (2nd choice) Tower and it will drop you right off at the end of DTD. To get to DL, you can walk a bit down DTD and take the monorail in (we usually don't do this because you have to take baby out of the stroller and collapse it which I hate doing) or just walk all the way down DTD to the esplanade and from there you can enter DL. Now if you want to go to CA Adventure, you can go in through the Grand Californian - that entrance is by the Sephora store in DTD. Guest of the DL hotels are allowed to go through that entrance. It's a super quick and convenient way to get to CA Adventure.

I am amazed at how popular the HoJo's has become. DH said to me last night "so much for our little secret" ;) Mind you it has been a little over 7 years since we last were there but it was not the "hot" off site hotel by any means. The crowd was older as was the hotel.

With the new water feature I bet it is full of little kids and don't take this wrong but we prefer hotels without a bunch of munchkins. We are not anti munchkin, heck we have them also, it's just as the kids have gotten older we prefer the quieter settings.

Any recommendations?

You'd probably like the Candy Cane Inn (cute clean rooms, nice continental breakfast, cute pool and hot tub area, private Disneyland shuttle to/from the parks that you can catch either at the top of the hour, or at the half hour. Or you can walk to the parks. It's about the same distance as the HOJO, only in the opposite direction.). They get good reviews from people here on the DisBoards as well as on Tripadvisor.

That's where we would stay if we couldn't stay at the HOJO or afford to stay onsite.

Here's a link to their website:

Thank you for the reply! I just booked our 2 rooms (we need connecting rooms - my mom comes with us to watch the kids) at a rate of 270. a night. Was this a good deal? We got DTD / Boardwalk view. I hope the rooms are nice. I just read a review of someone who had some cleanliness and noise complaints. That's the problem with paying a lot per night -- your expectations are so high!

Thank you again!

What are your dates? If your 4 month old will be 7 months, that's 3 months from now... early April. That's right around Spring Break in which case $270 is decent... actually better than the AP rates! How did you book?
