Is Spring Break crazy busy

My son has started school so we're beginning to feel restricted as to when we can take our vacations - we were thinking of coming to WDW for spring break - his is march 11 thru march 19th (I've heard that different areas have different dates - also is this true?)

Yes, schools take different dates off. Some are off in March and some are off around Easter. I've been twice during the time period you'll be going. They are busy, but not near as busy as other times of the year. You will want to use Fast Pass and also maybe some of the EE hours. The times I've been in March have been very enjoyable. MK is the busiest. At Epcot, we walked on many of the attractions. You will not be able to walk on Soarin', get your fast pass early for this ride.

Most dates in March or April are insanely busy! IMO even moreso than the summer!

I am a die-hard and was amazed. It was unbearable, Restaurants were turning away walk-ins. NEVER again! This was last spring-break which coincided with Easter. We drove and the traffic down was horrible, the lines, it was lines form the moment our trip began on the road.
