Where I live in Maryland, residential and commerical construction just keep sprawling further and further out into the once beautiful countryside. Just a few months ago, hundreds of acres of old growth forest near where I live was completely clearcut to build ANOTHER townhouse community and strip shopping center.

The developers and the County Commission view the hills and forest as something ugly that needs to be bulldozed. They left about 5 trees on the 200 plus acre site. Now it is incredibly ugly!

Though when I ask people about what they think the most common statements are:

"Its progress"
"Those trees did not help the econoy, we need jobs"
"The population of the area is growing, we need a place for them to live and shop"
"It is easier to cut down all the trees and replant later"
"Your neighborhood, built in the 1950s may have been considered sprawl back then!"

So what do you think about sprawl and deforestation in your community?
