I will tell you that we did smoke in a non smoking patio. But it was late and I walked out checked on both sides of us and up both floors. If anyone was out I just walked out to the walk way and smoked. If not I sat on the patio. I noticed that there were ashtrays all over the grounds by all the doors of the longhouses and all the entrances to the GCH. I also noticed them at the place were you drive up to unload your car. I am a closet smoker I don't like anyone to see me especially kids so I do it in private. I know its silly. I agree with non-smokers rights not to have to smell it. I did notice that there were no ashtrays around the pool area. Maybe they figure if there is no ashtrays people won't smoke. I didn't see anybody smoke around the pools.

The only time I have found DIsney telling people its okay to smoke on the balconies of non-smoking rooms has been when they are putting a smoker in a non-smoking room.

Someone posted they thought there was no smoking on WL balconies. My DH smokes and they put us in a non smoking room when I called and complained they sent housekeeping up with an ashtray for the room and one for the balcony. I requested to speak to management and finally got us moved to a smoking optional room. My DH doesn't smoke in the room he smokes on the balcony.

To comment on your question though. When we ate at the Poly last summer and used the pool(we are DVC) we asked before going to the pool did they have a designated smoking area at the pool and we were told ," You can smoke anywhere you want outside." We found an area no one was at and put down roots there. I do believe they should have some sort of area designated.

If someone HAS to smoke, then request a smoking building. Please don't smoke in a non-smoking building. I know you'll think, "well, that's not fair to the children or to the persons who don't smoke" Well, neither is smoking near people who don't smoke. OR your partner could use this vacation as an opportunity to QUIT smoking.

Carrie= I completely understand what you are saying. BUT smoker's have to wake up and have a butt right away outside? OR have a butt right before they go to bed?? You can't control where the smoke goes. Like Balamav posted, go down the walkway where no one is and have your butt!! Don't smoke where non-smokers are.

Sorry, what that's just my opinion. And you know what?? I used to smoke, I quit 20 years ago, so I do understand what it is like to NEED a cigarette.

I book a non smoking building for a reason... So I don't or shouldn't have to deal with someone smoking. I am NOT quiet about someone smoking around me, I ask them to stop or move way away from me (if they can understand me between coughing and trying to catch my breath).

I can't wait until WDW makes all of there resorts "NON SMOKING"!!

Not sure if anyone knows this, but, every floor at the Grand Floridian has a "designated non-smoking floor" sign on it. However, smoking is permitted on every balcony. I questioned a few different cast members (front desk, housekeeping, etc), and they all gave me the same answer about smoking being allowed on the balconies. I guess smoking is also permitted around the resort grounds, as I noticed quite a few people smoking while walking around (and, a few while sitting at the pools).

Well actually I think the op's original question wasn't should smoking be allowed on the balconies but is smoking allowed. I think it's been answered and I wish a moderator would close the thread, it can only go downhill from here.:(

Hi. This post is turning into a debate about whether people think the original poster should stay in a smoking room or not. The original poster actually asked whether it is ok to smoke on the patio of a non-smoking room.

This has been discussed many times on this board. In the past, I have asked the front desk if it is ok to smoke on the balcony or patio at the WL, Poly and BC and was told yes each time. Many other people have been told the same. I would check with the front desk of the Poly when you arrive to make sure that this is still the case.

Now, I am closing this post because I don't think you deserve to have people telling you what kind of room, in their opinion, you should be staying in!
