Husband wants to do something other than WDW. We went to Yellowstone and South Dakota several years ago, and this was a great vacation for him. I am considering Sedona and Grand Canyon but wonder if there are things there to entertain little ones. There will be 3 and 7 year old along. Also considered starting @ Sedona/Grand Canyon and driving to Disneyland so everyone gets their "thing" but I worry this will be too long of a drive. Is a week long enough to get all these attractions completed?
Also in Sedona area... interested in resort that is comparable to moderate-deluxe level of WDW. I would like to budget less than $200 per night. Anything you can tell me....

Doing a jeep tour over the red rocks in Sedona is a fun family activity. The kids could also play in the creek and body surf down Slide Rock. Assuming it's open. They close it down if bacteria levels get too high, or it gets too crowded. Sedona has lots of upscale restaurants and shops. Don't know what a 3-yr-old would do for entertainment at the Grand Canyon, and the rim isn't child proof. When I was a kid my mother was a nervous wreck trying to keep my sisters and me away from the edge.

Not sure how you would "start out" at Sedona/the Grand Canyon -- the closest airport of any size is in Phoenix.

considering coming in phoenix.
Spend couple days sedona.
Day trip up to canyon (would consider staying overnight but not sure).
Drive down to tucson - couple days there and fly home from Tucson.

Sedona and GC and both unbelievable!! I was a wreck in the Grand Canyon, and my youngest was 9 at the time. Words cannot even describe what you see/feel when you look over the edge!! I would wait until your kids got a little older for that.

Sedona is all around fabulous! But it especially great for hiking, eating, looking at and buying art and learing a lot about Indian culture. Jeep tours lots of fun, too! I would say minimum age would be 9 if you want to hike and site see ruins, craters, etc.

Can't wait to go back to both places!

We did this trip last summer with a group of family. 12 yo, 11 yo, 2 7 yos, 4 yo. Flew into Phoenix, stayed all week in Sedona and did two day trips up to GCanyon. It was an awesome trip!! We did Slide Rock--very fun. Just have to be very careful--the rocks are very slippery.
Did a cowboy dinner---horseback riding followed by wagon ride to cowboy vista and an amazing steak dinner. Highlight of the week. M Diamond Ranch.
Also saw Montezuma's Castle--Indian cave dwellings. Did Tuzigoot too---very fun and interesting.
Out of AFrica wildlife park. Spent a day down at the main drag in Sedona and saw the shops, had ice cream etc. Let the kids souvenir shop.
Went and watched the sun set over the red rocks near the airport---gorgeous.
We all loved the Grand Canyon. Yes, you do have to watch the kids and they do have to understand they must listen. I wouldnt take kids who are too rowdy as it could be dangerous. Ours all understood it wasnt an area to run around. That being said, there is plenty to interest kids. Some nice hikes and desert view with its awesome tower to climb, some Native AMerican dwellings, etc.We did two day trips from Sedona (2 hr each way drive) and that was perfect. More and the kids would have gotten bored.
It is a must see I think. We loved it so much that we decided we had to see more of the National Parks and we added Yosemite to our CA trip this summer!
Happy planning!

We've been to Sedona a couple of times. Lots of easy hikes that are just breathtaking.

just wondering... we are not quite a hiking group. We can go just short distances before we have boredom from the troops. We would prob do the jeep tour and prob horse riding and shops. And, are all the hotel properties timeshares. Several reviews I have read warn about that.

If you have trouble finding a place in Sedona, go on up to Flagstaff (between Sedona and the Grand Canyon.) Check out Embassy Suites and Little America. Lots of others to choose from.

We took the Pink Jeep Tours through Sedona. It's expensive, but fun. Please remember it is a jeep so if your family do no like bumpy rides, I would recommend to do something else. We took our DD's (12 & 8) over to the BEAUTIFUL animal shelter, because we were missing our dog who we placed in a boarding/daycare while we were gone.

We also had lunch at Oak Creek Brewery and Grill. Please remember to go there earlier than noon. Great food and very kid-friendly.

Absolutely a wonderful place.

My favorite Sedona hotel is the Matterhorn Inn. GREAT view of town, nice balcony but not too fancy, not a timeshare and not as expensive as some of the more swanky places. It is walking distance to the shops and restaurants in uptown. My kids at that age were good for a day or so there but not too much longer.

Red Rock State Park has a nature center and some easy walking trails that the kids enjoyed. We also did the drive through Oak Creek Canyon and stopped at the top where there are vendors selling all kinds of jewelry and such.

If you are looking for a fun day activity not too far away you could check out Lowell Observatory. Not every aspect was totally fascinating to my kids but each found something they really enjoyed.

We took them to Meteor Crater and while interesting it was very expensive and not something they want to go back to.

I've heard great things about Bearizona! We just ran out of time, we were there in August and the Cardinals were at training camp so we "sacrificed" a day to spend it there.

Wow. Interesting that you posted the alternative to WDW as Sedona. I've done 23 trips to Orlando (most repeats of any vacation destination) and six trips to Sedona (second most repeats of any vacation destination). All my Sedona trip have been with my son (Went when he was 2, 4, 7, 8. 10, and 12). If you can stay for seven nights, I highly recommend doing an owner timeshare rental -- you can find these on TUG2.net and Redweek.com. We usually stay at Arryo Roble condos (walking distance to uptown shops and resturants and shops (steep hill though) and lovely property with plenty of ammenities for kids and adjults and exapansive grounds. One negative of the condo pool (indoor / outdoor pool is that it is four feet deep, does have a little ledge, but very close supervison of your little ones would be needed - but then close supervision of children at a pool is always needed. For an intinary, we usually make sure to build in some pool / tennis time to enjoy the resort -- we enjoy going over to the little river on property too and when kids were younger did some playground time, We pick out two or three very family friendly hikes to do during the trip (make sure everyone in your party has hiking boots or shoes and be careful in what hikes you choose -- don't do a dangerous one with little ones) // Do a day trip to one of the nearby Indian Ruins sites (Montezuma's Castle would be the most family friendly), and we usually do one special tour -- Either Pink Jeep or a Helicopter Ride from the Sedona ariport. As you've never been before I think if you do a special tour you would see more with pink jeep. Sedona is an absolutely beautiful place, and we are thinking about doing trip number seven in 2013. A day trip to Grand Canyon National Park is a possibility from Sedona too and we have done this many time (usually if someone has never been before and wants to see this) -- It's a three hour drive each way, but very doable and pretty easy to do. There are also good bus trips from Sedona to Grand Canyon National park (day trips). You will save big dollars though if you do this on your own, especially if you have a lot of people. I've done it on my own twice and did a bus trip once from Sedona (very enjoyable also). The normal recommendation is to get lodging at the National Park for one night to have a longer experience there and to book that early as all rooms will book up, especially during the summer. We've never done that, though, and have always on our Sedona trips made Sedona our home base and done a day trip or two from there.

Here's a link to where we almost always stay. These ar large two bedroom / two 1/2 bath condos. The second bedroom only has two twins, so we usually get a condo rental for each family. I often go with extended family and we on several trips have gotten three different owner rentals next to each other. http://www.arroyoroble.com/index.html. It's easy to get an owner rental for about $1000 for the week. Retail you would pay closer to $300 a night. With an owner you don't get daily maid service.

Here is a link to Trip Advisor's Sedona information. The travel forum there has many destination experts who can give you good advice too.

If you are looking for just a hotel room / shorter stay, the Arryo Roble Best Western gets great review on trip advisor and would be in your budget. It has that great uptown location, serves a great breakfast, has a nice pool (I have a feeling it's shallower than the condo pool), and some great views too I think. It would be a great choice for a shorter Sedona stay. This link reviews the hotel and creekside villas (the ones that are rented by the hotel for a higher price and incude daily maid service) / more reviews though are of the hotel rooms.
