Is scotch guarding worth the $$$$$???

I wonder how you can tell if the SG is even done! I had it done (supposedly) to my sofa and I *thought* the liquid would bead up and you could wipe it off. Didn't happen. It seeped into the fabric like nothing was ever done.

I mean I was quick to jump up to clean the mess, but it had seeped into the fabric before I could get back! Luckily it wasn't a lot, but it was disappointing. You pay for something, you expect it to work. To this day I don't think it was done. If that was SG, then there's no reason to get it!

OK, I'll share my scotchguard story:

Years ago, we bought a couch and got talked into getting the scotchguard warranty. They tell you that if you get ANY stain on it, you have to call the toll-free number and the reps will assist you. If you try to clean the stain yourself, your warranty is then gone. So, we get a puppy and he pees on the couch. This happened on a Friday night. I call the 800 number and no one is there, the message says to call back on Tuesday (Monday was a holiday). So, I'm supposed to sit with puppy pee on my couch for days?????!!!! I left a message with the reps to have them call me back ASAP to tell me what to do to get this stain out. It's been over 10 years and they still haven't called me back...lol.

Of course I just cleaned up the stain myself right away and realized I was scammed into getting the scotchguard. Never again.

We bought leather this time too. I actually was dead against it, but gave into DH since I had picked the previous 3 sets. It's about 3 years later and I LOVE it.

We recently bought a new house.. and needed more furniture. My friend had 2 yr old leather sectional sofa that she wanted to get rid of because it didnt fit in her new house. She paid 3000.00 for it I bought it for 500.00 and love it! So comfy and i clean it with a wet washcloth it is holding up to the cats,kids and dogs. Im dying to trade in my other sofas now and get another leather sofa!

MY story with LazyBoy. Bought a couch..had it ScotchGuarded..then years
later the kid pukes cheese all over it-I know-GROSS-so I call and the guy has to clean it b/c I still have all the paperwork from the warranty. It was like brand new when they got done with it. I get the ScotchGuard, and keep all the paperwork forever, in case stuff like this ever happens again. But, you have to be careful b/c most warranties won't cover stuff like Koolaid and pet stains and "bodily fluids".

Sorry, OT here...

we are in the market for new furniture and are deciding between leather and microfiber. We have 3 dogs and 3 boys (8, 12, 15) and yes, the dogs do sit on the furniture. I am wondering how these materials hold up to body oils, the occasional dog puke, etc. The kids are not allowed to eat in the living room, but the dogs do chew their rawhides on the furniture. Hmmmm...maybe that will change... I would love to go with leather because of the dust issue but am concerned about doggy toenails, etc. Anyone with experience they can share?

Duet: We have two cats and though they are declawed in the front, they would definately scratch a leather couch "taking off" running/playing. We went with micro suede and it's worked out well for us.

I just had two rooms of microfiber furniture delivered yesterday (2 sofas, 2 chairs and 2 ottomans) and did not have them scotchguarded. My sister worked for Slumberland a number of years ago, and she insists that scotchguarding is a huge ripoff for the customer. It costs them pennies to apply it and they charge you an arm and a leg. She feels the spray-on stuff that you can buy and apply yourself is the way to go, however has stated that many of today's fabrics, like microfiber, tend to wipe up well without scotchguard protection.

I know Im jumping in late here but just wanted to give you a heads up. Usually in the Scotchhaurding warranty there is a tiny clause in itty bitty letter stating that you must have it reapplied every few years as it does wear off. My DH used to work in that feild and it was what they pushed the most as it was big money. SO really if you dont get it reapplied its a waste of money. Just thought a heads up for any other shoopers or at least to quiz about the warranty before having it done.

I used to sell new cars many years ago. The extra scotchguarding package (which also included a "deep seal" on the paint) was referred to within the salespeople's world as "mop & glow." It is PURE PROFIT! Do not buy it. It was a can of Scotchguard that the detailers would spray on the seats -- all in about 1 minute. I did it myself several times when I was waiting for a car to get finished if the detailer was busy with something else. The "paint sealant" was a wipe on/wipe off wax (which I also applied myself at times, in all of about 10 minutes). These things could have easily been purchased by the buyer for about $15 bucks. However, the dealership sold this package for $500.00 and touted it as necessary to protect your investment! The sales people pushed it because we earned an extra $200 commission on the sale (the dealership kept the other $300). BTW, at one dealership where I worked, the cars automatically had the "mop & glow" applied right after the cars arrived from the factory, but the dealership still charged for it as if the buyer were choosing to add it as an extra. So, the ones that said no they didn't want it, got it anyway, just like the ones that paid for it!

It was pure and simple profit. That is why the salesperson looked at you funny when you suggested doing it yourself. He didn't want to lose the commission on that extra goody, so he made it seem like they have a "special" way to apply this stuff that no one else dare try on their own!

Don't fall for this ploy. Buy your own Scotchguard and spray your own couch. That is all they are doing, but they are making a HUGE profit. Your money could better be spent on saving for your next Disney trip.

We bought our furniture from Bernie and Phyls. We did buy the scotchguard. Thank goodness. My daughter drew on it with marker or lipstick or something. We were told to try to get the stain out with the cleaner that they supplied to us and if we couldn't get it out they would send someone out to fix it. I couldnt' get it out. They sent someone out and gave a whole new covering for the side of the couch. It blended in perfectly. You couldn't even tell that it was fixed. I would buy it every time if it came with the warranty. If it didn't come with the warranty. I would buy the can myself.
