Dick Clark, God bless him, is getting older and frailer. Is Ryan gradually stepping into his "shoes"? This years NY's show is named "Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest". Will Ryan be the next "oldest teenager"???

I think it will ALWAYS be called Dick Clark's Rockin New Years Eve. Ryan has been the host for about 3-4 years now. I would say it is "his" show now. As for is he the next Dick Clark? Umm...no.

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! No Seacrest fan, But Ryan is STILL better than...Carson Daly!
If some can explain Carson Daly's Fame please send me a clue!:confused3

LOL! I went to NYC with a couple a friends a few years ago. I really wanted to try to get stand-by tickets for Rosie O'Donnell. It was a no-go. Then, I was told that Conan's show was handing out stand by numbers. I went to get a number, and came back to line up that afternoon. The line was super long. There was no chance I was getting in. While we were in line, they had a few people walking up and down the line announcing that Carson Daly's show had plenty of room in the audience. LOL! I think the entire line of Conan filled Carson's audience. I was glad I went, because Kathy Griffin was the guest, and I just lover her!

On a side, Carson seemed very snobbish. He didn't talk to the audience during the commerical break, and I don't even think he looked at us.

I don't think the opportunity exists for a "new" Dick Clark. What Dick Clark was to the national pop music scene back when was something that, while a huge part of history, is, well, history. Even if Clark were still spry and able, those times are long gone.

Ryan Seacrest has made his own mark in a broader sense hosting a variety of shows. He will, no doubt, be the new generation's pop icon, but things have changed. We'll have to see if his appeal lasts through generations like Clark, though.

I think there is something to the point that the kind of long-lasting-ness that was not uncommon many decades ago is simply no longer an aspect of our popular culture. Indeed, that impermanence actually helps foster a more vital and dynamic popular culture, these days, than we enjoyed back in the "old days". However, it does mean that icons, specifically, won't be able to become as big as they were before. Bigger isn't necessarily better, anyway, so no great loss. I'd rather have a series of time-relevant "Dick Clark's" and "Johnny Carson's" and "Beatles's" than one of any of these, that works to try to stay relevant over an extended period of time, but effectively, if successful, only serves to stifle the ability of new agents, and their new ideas and new vitality, to have their chance as the focus for our popular culture.

I'm ok with Ryan Seacrest....but he's not Dick Clark.

Isn't his 5 minutes of fame up yet?
Ditto. It doesn't matter who hosts the show, no one will ever measure up to Dick Clark.

Carson Daly was an MTV "VJ" (Video Jockey) on their music countdown show TRL. TRL ended recently as MTV has become nothing but reality TV.

Dick Clark cannot be replaced, and I really don't think anyone will come close to Dick Clark's legacy.

That being said, Secrest is everywhere, from his own radio show, to virtually every TV special, and of course AI. He is no Dick Clark, but may be the iconic host for the younger generation.

No. Dick Clark has been in show business since before Franklin's kite experiment. I'd be shocked if Seacrest makes it 10 years from today.

I think Ryan Seacrest is good at what he does. He definitely handles all of his jobs well. I don't think Dick Clark is replaceable, no one of that stature is really, but I think Ryan Seacrest does a fine job.

I don't care for Carson at all but I just wanted to comment we went to a taping of the Tonight Show and Jay Leno didn't talk to us during commercial breaks either. He was talking with people who worked on the show.
