Is respect earned or given?

Respect is earned. I treat everyone with consideration, which is not the same as respect, until they treat me in an inconsiderate manner. There are few I respect. Those that I do respect have earned it because of their actions, character and integrity.

I figured out a better way to say this.

Being respectful is a reflection on who I am...
Respecting someone is a reflection of that person.

What bothers me about this approach is if people need to earn your respect, how do you determine when they've earned it and how do you treat them before they've earned it?

When I meet you you have my trust and my respect. it is given to you... it is yours to keep and yours to lose. once you lose it though it can be hard to get back. but right off the bat... you have it.

I am the same way. I believe people and whatever they tell me, until I find out differently. I have had the wool pulled over my eyes many times, but it is who I am.
