For $3.50 a HALF gallon it pretty much guarantee that I never get sick again! Seriously though, is this stuff really worth the price -- what are the benefits? Or is it just an expensive health food that really doesn't do much? For the record I'm an adult and drank regular milk my whole life but I'm trying to eat healthy and I saw they sell organic milk but it's pricey.

I buy Organic Valley milk because I can verify they treat their cows humanely. Life on a regular dairy farm is not exactly pleasant. :worried:

The animals are also not fed antibiotics, which does a small part in helping to reduce antibiotic resistance. They are not fed growth hormones. There is debate whether or not antibiotics and growth hormones are passed on to us, but I'd rather avoid them and discourage their use just the same.

Finally, some organic brands (you have to be careful and check) support smaller, local farms instead of giant corporate conglomerates.

All is is worth an extra $2-3 per gallon to me!

Thanks for the info. All we have is Horizon Organic so I don't even know if it's different.

I think the taste difference is huge! Organic milk tastes much better to me.

Eh... Horizion Organic is owned by Dean Foods and is pretty much run like a giant corporate conglomerate. I've heard conditions at their main Idaho dairy aren't that much different from regular.

You might still benefit from the lack of hormones/antibiotics.

I am trying to give DD organic foods whenever I can. There is some evidence that all the growth hormones given to cows are one of the causes of early maturation in girls. Also, I don't want her exposed to antibiotics unless she really needs them. She eats organic eggs and milk, no red meat and chicken that is minimally processed.

It helps that we are a small family, if we had more kids, it would be a lot harder to spend the money. For instance, my 13yo cousin can drink a couple of gallons of milk a week on his own, so it would cost $10 or $12/week just for milk!

I'd say that if you want to be healthier then avoid milk totally (come on, it's for the cows, not us!).

But I seem to drink a lot of milk myself, so I can't judge :teeth:

Horizons Organic is very questionable with their practices. If you are on the east coast look for Trader Joes. All their Milk now is not treated with antibotics & the cows are treated humaley. Some are orgainc some is not.

Yes drink organic the milk is worse today then when you were a kid.

Free4: do a search for "organic milk" in this forum..there was a discussion back in mid-January, I believe you were part of it....there is some info there .....and an idea of where to go for more info on both sides of the issue :sunny:

our family avoids milk as much as possible - but have bought Horizon where the Rice Milk we use will not work in recipes...I was not aware of the problems with them and will now look for an alternative!!!!!!

I buy Organic Cow milk, it's delivered by the milkman every week, not much higher than the price of regular milk. I started buying it after my breast cancer experience. I think it tastes a lot fresher than regular milk.

How did you find a company to deliver it?

Well, we had milk delivery anyway from a company here in the suburban Boston area. I was surprised to learn they carried organic milk but since it's becoming more popular they added it and I started ordering it with my regular weekly order. They carry all natural meats too, delivered right to your doorstep. :goodvibes

We buy Stoneyfield Farm organic milk. How are their practices?

As far as I've been able to find out, they run a pretty good company and actually seem to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of organic standards.

I dont' hesitate to buy from them!

Have you seen the Green Guide http://www.thegreenguide.com/about/

Its a Consumer Digest for people living green. You need to join but you can poke around. I believe that is were I read about Horizons. In a nut shell they want the Organic Lable but they are doing it only for the money. I believe they have tried to get the rules changed so it snot so hard to have an organic lable ect.

Some company are trying to make the world a better place.

I love milk products (not so much milk). In college I developed lactose intollerance, but never drank much milk before that.

Now that my youngest DD is allergic to milk in order to continue to breast feed her I have had to cut milk (and eggs) 100% out of mine and her diet. I must say I feel better and I lost 20 lbs (in 4 months, but it leveled off after that) However not having ANY milk limits most desserts, many chocolates and other holiday foods, so that helped alot.

My oldest lives on the horizin milk boxes. I buy them because they are easier. I don't have to worry about cross contamination as much (drink it throw it out.)

I think that organic milk has it bennifits (because of the hormones and antioboic.) Especially in young girls. However I think "orgainic" for other foods is a waste. (except meats and milk products) Are orgianic bananas that much better? It does not mean it is going to taste any better or any better for you in genral. I feel it is just a marketing ploy to make peopel think it is better. I don't have anything against orgainic foods, but I don't go out of my way for them.

I think they are wonderful. I love their yogurt and dedication to the environment.

I just tried their yogurt today as well. It was different, not as sweet as I'm used to, but still very good.

The biggest problem I have is finding this stuff! WalMart carries next to nothing and Hyvee has a "Health Market" area with some stuff, but the selection isn't too big.

MAKmom: thank you for the info on the green guide - I will check that out!!! If it has been around for some time, I beleive I used to consult it.....or else something similar, but haven't been reading up on those issues as much as I should lately..thank you for that!!! I realize itis not enough to just grab a product because it is labelled "organic", but also have to support a company because of its practices -I have to get current on which companies those are and not just grab the most convenient!!!! :sunny:

Organic bananas are not that much better for you the pesticides do not penatrate the skins. Orgainc apples & pears are, the pesticides do go into the pulp. The Green Guide that I posted the link for lets you know what is worth it & what is'nt.

The other reason I buy orgainc is the pesticides are pollution, it runs off into our ground water ect.

Have you been to Trader Joe's? There is 4 in Michigan Ann Arbor, Farnington hills, Rochester Hills & Royal Oaks. Bananas are 19 cents a lbs 29 for Organic.
