Is notary a new thing for DVC?

I may be losing my mind, but I don’t recall having to get anything notarized previously when I purchased DVC. It used to be so easy, but now I have to make an appointment which is not for another 1 1/2 weeks. Has it always been this way and when did it change? I may have to cancel if I can’t get my son to fit the notary times in his schedule. This is an add on to a current membership if that makes any difference.

Notary has always been a part of the process since I’ve been a member. You do not have to do online notary. You can print the documents off and take it to any notary. Around me, the local courthouse or library usually will be my notary on documents for free

If you have a brick and mortar bank, someone there should be able to notarize the documents, without an appointment but need to go when the notary is present (or maybe there's always someone at bank that's a notary). Banks where you don't have an account should also be able to do so, but likely for a small fee. All my add-ons done from home close to 20 years ago had to be notarized.

Thank you…Still so strange to me since this will be my 3rd contract and I don’t recall taking papers anywhere. On the previous contract we added our 2 sons who were in college, out of state. For sure they would not have taken anything to a notary.

When we bought direct a couple a years ago, DVC set up a virtual notary appointment for us in NJ. I can’t remember if we talked via phone or video call? Just remember it was quick.

In the past, you only needed a notary when financing a direct DVC purchase. All cash skipped the notary requirement.

Starting July 1st 2023, Florida Statute sections 692.202-205 required members to acknowledge they weren't purchasing FL property from a restricted foreign country. DVC initially added an addendum members signed and agreed to and you could still skip the notary if purchasing cash.

In 2024/2025 this foreign principal agreement now requires a notary for all direct purchases. The online notary is free and included with your purchase to streamline things. You can all be present on the same video call or setup multiple individual video calls if that isn't feasible. You will also need to upload photo ID and show the photo ID during the online notary if you choose to use it.

Oh that’s interesting. We bought June 2023 but paying over 90 days. So we did get the update about the new statute, additional paperwork and I guess that’s when and why we ended up doing virtual notary.

Do you belong to AAA? I’ve also used a notary at the UPS Store.
Yep, I was just going to say just print them out and take to a UPS store (with everyone needed to sign).
Done and done. :-)

I remember the rollout was a little bumpy. I don't think all the contracts even had it when they should have and DVC had to retroactively issue it. I feel like someone here on the boards was also able to rescind way past "10 days" because they hadn't received or signed this and couldn't close? There was so much going on during that VGF sale 🤣

Ahhh, thank you for the thorough explanation and reassuring me that I haven’t completely lost my marbles. The notary is not a problem for me, but I don’t think I will be able to get my kids to get it done in time. They are both in college, without a car and not a lot of availability during the offered times. We really only wanted to add the kids since we are getting older, but it looks like it might be a problem this time around.

No problem! I believe they offer 9am to at least 7pm ET from what I have seen. Maybe the holiday is messing with hours/availability? I think you can even complete it on a smartphone if that would help with your kids away in college.

If you really want the points with their names attached I would speak with your guide and/or QA to see when you absolutely must sign by. You can honestly push it out a few weeks, but QA will keep calling you to remind you and kindly make sure you don't have any questions. If you explain the scheduling conflict and tell them you can have everything completed by X date I think they would work with you and just note everything will be completed on a future date.
