Is Nassau safe?

I just spent a week in Nassau. For me it was very safe. Walked all over. Nobody bothered me. Nobody tried to sell me anything. I beginning to wonder if somethings wrong with me.

It is like anywhere, you have to be aware of your surroundings and not go into any areas that are "off the beaten path". My parents have even went and walked to Graycliff and had no problems at all. I have other family members that have small kids and walked to the Queens Staircase and back with no problems. Just remember to stay alert and also keep in mind that it is different from America and that is their culture. That doesn't mean their culture is bad...just different. Keep a open mind and it can be a enjoyable experience. If you have never been I would say get off the ship and see it for yourself (at least once). Also, as far as people trying to sell you stuff... it makes it easier if you go into port with a crowd of people. If they do stop you say no thank you and move on. If they insist tell them you already have a excursion booked. That should be the end of it. They are a poor country and are trying to make a living. It is to be expected.

I have to say though that even for the American that doesn't live very wealthy after being on a Disney ship it makes the ports look even poorer! We realized how extravagant the ships are after we got back on it in Nassau. Funny how things/experiences can change your perspective.

Nice comments. That is why they always say that travel is one of the best educators there is. Yes I even think a vacation on DCL can open your eyes a little bit to the world around you. I remember telling some workmates about my DH being offered drugs 3x in Jamaica. They responded with I thought you went on a Disney cruise? LOL I honestly believe people believe that going on Disney will keep you in some sort of bubble where it is all fairytales and pixie dust. Sorry I don't even feel that way at WDW or DL. I had to explain it was not Disney Cruiseline that offered him the drugs and that Disney does not own the island of Jamaica.

As far as Nassua, I know many even in my own family who feel the same way about Nassau. I don't get it. Mexico with their sniffing dogs and all the stores you have to pass in order to get anywhere made me much more uncomfortable than just picking up a taxi right off the boat in Nassau and heading to the beach.

I hear you. No one offered me coke when I was in Nassau. I wonder if I look too square! :flower:

Use common sense as you would when visiting any city.
1. Don't make yourself a target by wearing expensive jewelry
2. I you don't need it, leave in on the ship in the safe. e.g. You don't need your Dillard's card, birth control pill or car keys in Nassau!
3. Never walk alone
4. Avoid back alleys
5. Don't flash large amounts of cash
6. Don't drink too much
7. Be polite but be firm. Say, "No thank you, I am not interested" with a smile the first time. If you have to repeat, lose the smile and say it again.

THIS!!!! Nassau is a small island that you have to treat like any big city in America.
