Is Nassau dangerous?

I was just reading another thread and someone posted a link to an article that referenced a murder on Nassau where the person who was killed had attempted to stop a robbery. The article (I wish I could post a link but my iPad is not playing nicely...it was on something like '"cruise law" or something) made it seem like Nassau is really dangerous and warned people who cruise there not to get off the ship. We've sailed to Nassau a few times and gotten off the ship twice and never had a problem but that was several years ago. Have things changed??? We're going again in November and my mom really wanted to do some shopping but now I'm not sure if we should!

My 24 yr old dd and I were there in Feb. So, two single women. I was a bit worried from what I had read but I think if you are smart it is OK. I wore capris with pockets that buttoned and took the bare minimum with me in my pockets. No purse etc. Pay attention to your surroundings and don't go into scary looking places like alleys. Think of it like going thru a bad part of a city.

Our two most recent trips to Nassau were in January and March, 2013. IMHO, Nassau is no different than any other tourist town in the Caribbean. Don't flash your wealth, keep your eyes and ears open, and travel on well known, frequently used routes to see the attractions. My family and I walked from port to Fort Fincastle, through downtown (including the pirate museum), and shopped in the straw market and downtown without a problem. I went alone from the ship to the Clinique store with cash in my pocket, never had a problem and returned to ship with enough cream to keep me going for another year ;)
Nassau is not the only port with reports of violent crime, there has been at least one incident in St Thomas in the past few years too. Common sense goes a long way.

The pan-handlers trying to sale their garbage is obnoxious, but not dangerous I don't think. I heard you DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR BRAIDED, unless you want to bring extra critters (head lice) on board with you. Me and DH caught a taxi to Paradise Island, and to tell you the truth, it scared me to death...the driver kept on taking these little detours down alleys and side streets, and I was waiting for him to stop and his friends to jump in and rob us. Be smart and be alert. Do not carry anything that can be easily yanked from you or pocket-picked. Practice situational awareness.

Being a tourist in Nassau is probably far safer than driving your car on the freeway in the US.

I don't feel any more or less unsafe in Nassau than going downtown in my own city.

Ditto all the previous posts. Use common sense, don't carry a bunch of valuables, and don't get your hair braided. You'll be fine. :)

Agree 100%

We've been to Atlantis twice on vacation the 2nd time we took our 4year old a few weeks before we were to leave there was a stabbing at an Atlantis night club. Of course I felt worried taking my DD along but I feel nervous taking her anywhere even the local walmart. We live in a scary world your not safe anywhere. Enjoy Nassau as if it were your home town and yes use common sense

I don't know if it's unsafe, but when we were there last August we saw two locals get into a fistfight outside Senor Frogs. It scared my kids (and me!) so we went back to the ship. When we were there last month, we didn't get off the ship at all in Nassau. There's so much to do onboard anyway :)

I consider my wife and I to be a little adventurous so keep that in mind with this post.

We've been to Nassau numerous times with both Disney and others and usually take 1-2 cruises a year. 2 years ago we decided we would try to make it to the zoo on the island as we've just about done everything else there is to do. Directions indicated it wasn't that far away and we like a good walk. About half way there, a local priest stopped us and said we should quickly head back to the tourist areas as it's not safe to be on that part of the island by ourselves. When I hesitated, he pulled closer, looked me in the eyes and said "for the safety of your family, you should go". No taxi's were driving in our area so we headed back "South" to the main road and took the next cab back to port.

We hit the straw market or don't leave the boat now...felt like we dodged a bullet that time and the Lord was looking out for us. I'm a percentages guy and this one is just too high now in my book.

I find it fascinating that Disney continues to sail here but pulled out and stopped making the west coast Mexico trips. We got off in each Mexican port and there was no where near the fear and threat of violence that seems prevalent in Nassau. We had a great time. Especially in Cabo that was super clean, friendly, and safe. After reading many posts and articles on this subject I wouldn't get off of the ship in Nassau.

I read that post, too, and now I'm second guessing my idea to book the Comfort Suites room and taking a cab vs doing the Disney Atlantis excursion. Safety -wise, I'm thinking the Disney excursion is the way to go probably. Ugh.

I also believe that there are places in the United States that are more dangerous than any port we could go to on a cruise. Use common sense, stay out of isolated areas, do not walk around on your own, and do your research. We have gotten off the ship in every port the first time at least. There are a couple ports we don't care for, but it's based on our own impression of what we found there -- nothing to do with if it was dangerous or not. We have never felt threatened in the ports. We enjoyed Cartagena the most on our PC repo and also liked spending time in Aruba.

I think that DCL stopped doing the MR cruises because they couldn't fill the ship for them, not due to any danger in the ports [except for the one that was dropped and replaced by a double stop]. There were constantly KSF discounts offered attempting to get guests to book.

Right and I thought they couldn't fill the ship because of the perceived danger in Mexico. People still flock to be taken to Nassau on the Dream though for some reason. Those trips do include Castaway Cay so maybe that's why.

Don't mind me. I'm just a bitter Californian who misses the ship being here more often. ;)

I would also like to point out that the person killed attempted to stop the robbery. That is very brave. However, most of the time, they will tell you just to give up whatever belongings you have, because people being gunned down in the street is much less common.

Did anyone hear about the shootings at a Mother's Day parade I think in Baltimore? So really, it's not just Caribbean cities, it seems like its anywhere PEOPLE are.

I do think you can have a safe time at Nassau. When you book an excursion, there are guards right there at the pier and they escort you right to your ferry through the gates, and you have to have your ticket because they only allow the ones with tickets/wristbands etc to go through the gate on the ferry. We noticed a heightened security right by the pier. Once we boarded, it was only crew members and tourists. Blue Lagoon was totally, completely safe. No one offered to sell us ANYTHING. No one asked to braid our hair, or buy this etc. It was so easy going. We kept our eye on our belongings because of other tourists but not because of locals.

So to new cruisers, I think if you book a tour like a catamaran snorkel (very very safe) or the ferry to the Blue Lagoon (very very safe also), you will be just fine.

The only caution is that when you come back, they drop you off right in front of the straw market. We were glad because we had a little bit of shopping to do at the strawmarket (we planned it, we knew exactly what we wanted and then we ran outta there) and got directions to the Tortuga shop, all of which is within sight line of the Cruise ship. It was just my twinkie and I, two blondes, for about 40 min getting our shopping done. We minded our surroundings and didn't lalligag and then got back on the ship.

But if you don't want to shop, you don't have to, you can walk 5 min and be right at the check in point to get back on the boat.

If you don't want to get off Nassau, you don't have to. If you want to do something safe, my suggestion is to book a professional excursion as most of these have very good reputations and they have guards escort you right off the pier to take you away from the city (where the real beauty is anyway.) The bahamas and reefs are beautiful!

In all honesty, it's not any different than Jamaica, or Costa Maya, Honduras, Belize got a bad rap too, Mexico etc. The only rich island I've ever seen was Grand Cayman, and it is British owned I think, but there are tons of banks in that town. Which is funny because you always see the 'bad guy' on the TV show with a foreign account in the Cayman Islands. haha.

Use your sense, don't go far from well populated areas. And as for the comment about a fist fight at Senor Frogs, well enough said! It's Senor Frogs. They have one on every island and people go there just strictly to get toasted...

We've had two great cruises to Nassau. We had something booked each time. (although our friends went to Junkanoo public beach and didn't say they felt unsafe or anything...)

I wouldn't hesitate to go back in a moment! Beyonce and Tiger Woods have houses right there, Atlantis major huge ginormous resort is right there. Yes there are some bad areas, but there are plenty of beautiful and safe areas too. I think that can be said of any city.

I personally do not feel uncomfortable wandering around Nassau. To me its just like any major US city. Use common sense, stay with the crowd, do not wander dark alleys alone, and make sure not to wear your best jewels, watches, purses while off port. My group found a super nice local who walked us around and treated us great. He kept the hagglers off us and showed us where to find the best deals. I remembered reading his name from cruise critics on a few occasions so I felt comfortable taking him up on his offer. Sitting at work his name now eludes me but if I remember it I'll update it on this post. =)
