Is MORPHINE normal after giving birth?

My SIL gave birth this morning via caesarian, and I have just found out that she is now on Morphine for pain. Is this normal?

Yes, it is. They will usually hook the new mom up to a morphine drip which is controlled by pushing a button. I know from experience that the button will only let you push it every 11 minutes or something like that. I kept trying though!

There are varying practices with regard to post-Cesaerean treatment.

They did give me a morphine-type pain killer because my insurance will not pay for a continued epidural drip post-op. Many insurance companies will pay for this practice.

She needs to depend on it as little as possible--feeling the pain will allow her to know her limits.

I've never had a c-section, but I'm a childbirth instructor, and yes, it's pretty common. Each doctor has his own favorite drug that he uses for most patients, but that's a common one.

They had me on a morphine drip after my first c-section. NEVER AGAIN!!! I had the scariest hallucinations, I'm talking VERY SCARY, demonic-type hallucinations.

Second c-section, I told every medical person that came in the room - don't give me that again!! That time, they left the epidural in - much better!!

Well I had a regular birth but an immediete crash surgery for a ruptured uterus. I was cut completely up and down my stomach. I got Tylenol. I can't imagine getting morphine for a c-section.

WOW, I never heard of that until now. I got Percocet and 800 Ibuprofen and it worked wonderfully as long as I didn't let it wear off. The nurses were actually yelling at me because the next morning after my son was born, I was jumping out of bed by myself! He was born at 8:37pm. Granted I REALLY don't want to be cut again, next time I think I'm going to try for a VBAC, but if I have another C, I'll be requesting the Percocet!!!

I think people freak out hearing "morphine". It's really very commonly used, it's a wonderful drug for pain management, cheap, effective and it is not habit forming when used in these cases. Most hospitals use a lot of it

SSB had after back surgery, and they told me that they like as moves through system very quickly.... so impactful for short term, but does not linger for long haul...

You sure that wasn't Tylenol 3 or something? I can't imagine anyone just giving tylenol after that kind of surgery! You would be in terrible pain

Is there a drug called duramorph? I think I had that in my epidural but it was making me sick. They switched me to demerol shots then to demerol/phenergan in the pill form. I think it was over the top...I was having nightmares of people in white trying to kill me.

Morphine is very commonly used, in the US and over here in Europe, after a variety of procedures. Morphine is a wonderful way to alleviate the pain that comes immediately after an operation - but as the OP implies, when improperly used, it can easily lead to dependency. That's why the important thing is that it's administered in a hospital and under close supervision.

I had morphine immediately following my surgery, but no drip and no more doses. I couldn't wait for it to wear off because I itched like crazy! They kept asking me if I needed a pain pill and I was just begging for more antihistamines.

I had a morphine drip for the first 24 hours following my c-section. I honestly could not wait to have the stupid IV taken out as I hated hauling the thing around with me to the bathroom, the nursery, etc. It also caused me to itch really bad. I was fine with just taking pain pills, although they did make me drowsy. They helped a lot.
