I've got a friend who'd like to buy their child an Ipod shuffle or nano for christmas. I was reading the software requirements and it said Window 2000 w/service pack 4. They've got windows ME and I'm not sure her dh would be willing to invest in a software update right now so I was wondering if Windows ME would work. Does anyone know?

My guess is that Windows ME will not work, just based on problems I had with it in the past and it's lack of compatibility with many things. I had to upgrade to XP in order to get my FireWire card to work for my digital camcorder.

Windows ME is kind of like the watered-down home version of plain old Windows 2000, and it is so horrible that Microsoft doesn't even support it anymore. If your friend is going to be getting new software, they really need to update their operating system, either to Windows 2000, or preferably Windows XP.

I agree with Bob, the Ipod Shuffle will probably not work with ME.

A driver may be able to be downloaded (do a Google search) to get ME to recognize the Ipod but that may be more trouble than it's worth. Upgrading to XP is the best bet.

Win ME is basically a suped up version of Win 98, so no, most new software, nowadays will not work with it. I have Win ME & I'm going through the same problem.

The only MP3 player I've found that works with ME AND has all the features I want - capable of making playlists, sorting my own songs vs. shuffling only, is this OLDER model of Sandisk. It got 135 great reviews from Amazon & other places. NOTE: it is a rectangular shape, NOT the newer odd looking shape out.

It was down to $69 on sale with a rebate before Black Friday. I missed the rebate by one day! Hoping it will go back down immensely after Xmas.

Also note, a lot of sites to buy & download MP3 songs sites do NOT work with Win ME. Itunes & Napster do NOT. So far, Walmart & Emusic.com are two that I found do. make sure they have the latest version of Windows Media Player, along with the updated codecs, installed on their PC to hear the downloaded songs correctly. :listen:

ME is total crap, so probably not!

Among the computer tech help desk people I know, Windows ME stands for "Mistake Edition"; it was one of the buggiest operating systems ever released. Microsoft doesn't even support it anymore, so an upgrade to 2000 or XP is your best bet.
