Is it worth it for me?

I received the DVC video and have been reading these posts. It sounds like a good investment in my future vacations. But...right now it is myself and my soon to be 6yo daughter. I think I would be able to buy the minimum # of points and still have nice vacations. My question is, since it is only the 2 of us, is it really worth it, or is the DVC more appropriate for the more "traditional" family? I know there will be occasions where others will come with us, but for now I'm just planning on the 2 of us. Thanks for any info.

I think there are LOTS of DVC households that are not typical!!! It is the two of you afterall, and you deserve to have wonderful vacations! You are a family!!! If that's the only thing holding you back, sign up soon before the price increase!!! You and your daughter will have wonderful vacations!

I am a single person - I brought in 1993 and I love it. My friends and family have all gone to wDW with me.

(IMHO) is for anybody who has not forgotten how to have a bit of fun and enjoy life - regardless of the number, ages etc of people in the family. At the (almost) other end of your spectrum, the first time I went there was me (of course) then in my early 40s, one friend late 40s and another friend mid 50s. And I haven't stopped going since. DH was a great sceptic and only went because I announced very enthusiastically that we were going the following year and he didn't want to disappoint me. Now he can't stay away (he is 61) and would stay for three months every winter if we could afford it!

I don't think you will be disappointed if you do buy and, as you say, you will have some lovely vacations staying in top quality accommodation, something we just could not afford to do without DVC.

Single too and just purchased an OKW resale. Should have bought in 1993!! I feel it is going to be a great deal for me even if I don't have anyone else join me. If I do, all the better.

Oh yeah, it's worth it! My first trip to WDW was when I was a single mom with a 7 year old son. We had a great time (on a budget so tight it could barely breathe!) and went about every other year after that. Had I known then what I know now, DVC would have been a great value!

Going with my son back then has some of our best memories. I'd bet your kiddo would also build great family memories with you.

Things have changed, I'm remarried 5 years, DS is 18 and we all go to WDW together - DVC since last year.

If you plan to visit at least every other year, it's worth it. And with 2 of you your points will go farther as you will only need a studio or a 1 BR once in awhile. Now you have to decide which resort to purchase! Don't overlook resales.

The first week in Feb. my 6 yr. old daughter and I stayed in a 1Br.for a week. I was a little unsure of how this would work out as this was our first vacation with just the two of us. I thought she might get bored having to spend a whole week with "just Dad." Well, we had a wonderful time and when the week was up, she told me "Dad next time can you make our vacation longer." It brought a tear to my eye. I justify the 1 BR. with the rationalization that having the full kitchen for breakfast and an occasional dinner is so convenient for my fussy eater, along with the VCR and free tape rentals helps make for a great vacation for the two of us.

Wvjules, if you get the chance, you should take the tour. It's nice to have a washer and dryer in your room , a kitchen, two or more tvs with a vcr, and a jacuzzi. Our 5 yr old loves to take a bubble bath in the jacuzzi. With the washer and Dryer right in your room, you don't have to overpack for your child, or have to wait in a hotel's laundry room. We save a lot of money on cooking noodles and such for the kids in the room. Their choice not ours. We usually prefer to eat out on vacation. Your' child will also love the community hall at the boardwalk.
It may or not be for you, but I think once you stay that first time, you'll be hooked. If you're not, the other on-site properties are still great. Good luck either way.

I'm another single who bought in 1994. I liked the pre-paid vacation aspect and didn't consider DVC or WDW as only for a "traditional" family.

There's lots of flexibility with a DVC Membership and it has been wonderful. I've enjoyed solo vacations as well as shared this with friends and family.

If you can afford the cost of points and yearly fees, do consider it.

All the above posts, especially peterd, hit the high points. Don't forget, you can also stay at Vero beach and Hilton Head AND there are a lot of NICE places that take points per night and you can trade for a week at Interval International.....and I almost forgot, you can apply your points to the Disney Cruise Line.
There, that should cover anyplace you might want to go on vacation the next couple of years!!!

Ok, I've been lurking for a while on this board. But this one's sounding close to home. I bought at OKW last October. Sight unseen. I'm a single mom, with a 7 year old dd. Vacations have been a dilema since my divorce. Last year I talked to a travel agent and told her my daughter wanted to go to the beach. She didn't remember ever having been to a beach. I also stipulated I wanted to go somewhere where I could have a good time and not feel uncomfortable. (Like, wish I had a gun for protection or whatever!) The travel agent sent us to Vero Beach. One day and I was hooked. By the time I left I decided this was how I wanted to take vacations. I decided on OKW because I knew we wanted to go to Disney World more than once and maybe every other year. We'll be going home in June and then taking a cruise. I know I'll be able to take vacations that she'll always remember. That will make it worth every dime

If you can afford it do it.

We have no kids now but bought with the idea of taking our kids when we have them and taking grandma along to babysit.
For now we can make due in a studio and when we have little kids and grandma a one bedroom and when they get older a 2 bedroom and the kids can bring their friends.

I can just picture our kids friends now "you parents are Disney freaks"

for all your wonderful advice. I am seriously considering buying into the DVC. I've considered the resales, but the ones that look appealing are pending sales.

Unfortunately I won't be down there on vacation until June 9. I plan on taking a tour, but since I'll be there after June 3, I'll miss the $72/pt rate and it will be $75. I really don't want to buy until I decide where I want my home resort so I definately need to take a tour first. I think I'm leaning toward WLV and OKW. Or maybe I should wait until they open a new DVC resort.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for all the advice.

To us, you can't beat Disney's attention to detail and service in their resorts, and we've traveled a lot on our jobs. Disney resorts always have things for kids of all ages to see and do. DVC lets us go on a variety of vacations, and stay in places that are more like home than a hotel room. We don't have to jam every activity into one trip because we know we can always go back, since the most expensive part of the trip for us(the room)is paid for. We certainly can't be a traditional family: two adults, one with grown kids and grandkids. We've had trips by ourselves, with grandkids, and with the whole family, and had a blast every time. The kids reminisce about our trips often, and we all can't wait for the next one.
