Is it worth going to Ohana for the atmosphere?

So my BF and I are booked into Ohana for dinner during our Disney trip in September...

At first I was really excited about it, because of the theming and the big flames, and the friendly waiters... I've never seen anything like it! :cool1:

So we booked our reservation. Yay!

But now that I actually look at the menu in more detail, I don't know if it would be a worthwhile dining experience - for me, especially.

I would LOVE the fried wontons with peanut sauce. That's very me! And the salad would be nice too.

I'd try a chicken and coriander wing, but I kinda hate coriander. Eeek! I'm bad.

As for the skewers... I'm not much of a red meat eater. I eat it because I know I should, to keep up my iron levels. But after a while, I get an image of myself chewing on a piece of cow, and I can't look at red meat again for days.

So I'd have some of the beef one. I would try the turkey one, but I've always thought turkey tasted like pee. I might try a sausage, but definitely not the pork. Don't even get me started on pork.

My BF would have a few more things than I would, but he still doesn't like pork or turkey. Or fat sausages.

Then there's the bread pudding. Whaaaa!? Bread pudding? Where's all the chocolatey goodness?!

So my question is... Is it worth making a trip to Ohana, just because it's fun and different? Or do you think we should change our ADR?

Thankyou!!!

We love 'Ohana so we would recommend trying it. We think the bread pudding at the end is better than most chocolate items.

As veteran WDW travelers, my advice to you is to try it at least once and make your decision about repeating based on the experience you have there. The reviews and posts are wonderful information .....and quite enjoyable to read, but unless you've been there, you don't know how YOU will feel about it. Over the years we always try one new place each trip and discard one...many times our preferences don't match up with the "average" but we are so glad to have made our own decision. Personally we love Ohanas and it gives my DD a chance to wander around the resort, buy some things in the gift shop, etc. because we will not be staying there anytime $oon. (our resort of choice is the ASMo). We have ressies for the first meal and last meal of our trip there this summer. :woohoo:

We like 'Ohana, but we are also unrepentant carnivores. On a recent visit, though, my DW's aunt, who is pretty much a vegetarian for health reasons, managed just fine. They prepared a noodle bowl with tons of fresh veggies for her, and she nibbled on some turkey, and announced it was all perfectly yummy.

The Poly is a sentimental favorite resort of ours, and it's more lovely than ever, and 'Ohana does have a boisterous charm.

BTW, I didn't think the turkey tasted like pee, and I've had pee from all over the world. ;)

Oooh... Good thoughts, except because we're from Australia, I don't know if we'll ever get back to Disney again! I would love to, and you never know, but this is sort of our "once in a lifetime" USA trip! Which is why I want to try lots of fun restaurants with yummy food!

Hahaaa! Dreamfinder, that made me laugh out loud, and I don't even know what you mean!!

(By the way, did your DW's aunt request a vegetarian meal before she went to Ohana? Or just on the day?)

RE: Pee ... just my twisted sense of humor. Actually, I've never tasted it, but your comparison to turkey was pretty funny.

DW's aunt looked sort of crestfallen when she saw the menu, and our server picked up on it and actually offered a vegetarian alternative. So you can ask after you're seated.

The chiken wings did not have much of a corriander taste when we were there, more sort of seett bbq'y if that makes sense.

We were disappointed with Ohana. After all the great reviews, we found the food to be poor quality -- tough meats, etc. And the ambience, well, if you like bad singing while children play with hula hoops, you should rush there. Otherwise, eat somewhere else.

You can't count on the atmosphere at 'Ohana. There is a main room and a side room. You can't see the fire pit or any of the action from the side room; in fact most of the tables in that room aren't even near any windows. And if you want really good food, you need to skip it.

We were not impressed with it there at all. Our food was not that great. We enjoyed many other places at WDW much better.

Have you considered Ohana for breakfast. Even though it is character (Lilo, Stitch, Mickey, etc...) the food was good. We stayed there in Feb. and did both dinner and breakfast. The menu might suit you better for breakfast.

good luck!! and have fun!

Unless you're seated at a great table, there isn't much atmosphere. We were seated on the side of the fire pit and so we couldn't view the windows or anything; mostly just the lobby and the kids running around. The lady on the eukele our night was nothing short of obnoxious; not exactly entertaining. Course our family had a great time imitating her the rest of the trip ;) We made it fun.

'Ohana is really for die hard carnivores. I would not dine there if I didn't want meat meat meat. They've added a few more side items but the starring attraction is the meat. It's based off a brazillean (can't spell that!) steakhouse format. Do you have any of those restaurants down under? Texas de Brazil is a big one in the states and is far superior to 'Ohana in many ways.

The fire pit really isn't a big deal either - you can't see the flames or anything unless standing to the side or peering over =) Though I appreciate the open kitchen format!

All that to say - with all the great restaurants at WDW and it being perhaps your one and only trip there, I wouldn't waste it on a restaurant that specializes in the very things you don't care for. There is better atmosphere other places that offers food more to your liking.

JMO - I hope regardless of your final choice that you have an excellent visit!!!!

Totally agree with the annoying lady on the eukele. She has been there the last couple of times that we dined at 'Ohana and everytime we hope that it might be her night off and she won't be there. She's more impressed with herself than the audience is. That's one big change they could make - get rid of her!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
