As a born and bred mid-Westerner, I say that it's POP!! Soda to me is soda water. After years of living in NJ, though, I do know what people here mean when they say they want a SODA!! I thoroughly humiliated my daughter on a trip to Chicago a few years ago when I stopped in the middle of the street, pointed to a sign in a restaurant window and started jumping up and down and yelling, "See, I told you it was POP!!""

Soda for me... although I must admit that most Alabamian's call all soda/pop "coke" for some reason. It could be pepsi, sprite, dr. pepper... it's all referred to as "coke."

If you want to be really general...its tonic. That can include coke, diet coke, sprite, etc...

SODA. One summer some girls from the PIttsburgh area helped at the local pool for the summer (their dad had been transfered to our part of the state while they stayed back with Mom). Anyway, A customer asked for a soda and she had no clue what the person wanted.

My entire immediate family says Pop... I am the only one who says Soda... sounds better to me Oh and my DH calls everything Coke. And I admit I prefer Coke to Pop any day
