She'll have just turned 3 when we go, and is a pretty tall, sturdy child. Last Sept, we flew Jetblue with the carseat (she was 23 months), and she kept trying to kick the seat in front. She tends to nap some on the plane, but not the whole time. Carrying the car seat onboard is a pain, but I will not compromise her safety at all. Should we keep the carseat, or check it?

Depends on her weight. After a certain weight, it is safe for them to ride in the plane seat with the seatbelt on. If she is not that weight, take the seat, besides, won't you need it for ground transport?
