Is it really necessary...(hurricane coverage)

I'm sorry, but I don't really think the major news networks need to cover severe storms 24/7. The weather channel? Absolutely, but CNN, FOX, MSNBC? Updates? Yes...but not 24 hour coverage. Give me a break.

It has turned into sensationalism, IMHO. I feel this way about all of the current things they cover excessively (like court cases).

What do you think?

(It's not a huge deal to me, I know I can turn the channel and I certainly don't lose sleep over stuff like this...just making conversation)

I agree with you. Actually this stuff never happened until Katrina. Blech go away.

I saw Spencer from FOX on David Letterman, and he said he did the coverage of Hurrican Katrina and nobody believed him. He said he begged on the air for the government to come bring aid for 3-4 days. It seems like everyone wants to cover the actual hurricane, but forgetabout the aftermath.

Hurricane coverage is the "in" thing these days, so every major cable news station's anchor feels the need to haul over to the hurricane's path every chance they get.

I swear, it's like a Shepard Smith or someone like him needs to get smacked upside the head with a street sign in order for them to stop.

If he begged ''on the air'' for aid, then they were covering the aftermath, right? I guess I don't understand what you are saying?

(I saw tons of aftermath coverage of Katrina- 24/7...for a week I think)

He's no stranger to getting smacked. :rotfl: Unfortunately, it doesn't stop him.

Honestly, I think that would only fuel the fire...unfortunately. Then they would all be trying to get hurt worse...and then they would be covering themselves (which ais another thing that is getting old- when they analyze the coverage)

Seeing as how I'm sitting on the Southwest coast of Florida where this thing is eventutally going to hit, I am thankful that I can always find current coverage. Things change all the time with this one and sometimes you turn on TWC and it's your "Local on the 8's" and you have to run and can't wait for the hurricane, so you can go somewhere else. There is nothing worse than waiting and waiting for a hurricane to hit. :guilty:

Yeah, but at least it would make me feel better that one of them were dumb enough to get themselves hurt. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I doesn't really bother me, as I've been through the aftermath of these hurricanes and it's not pretty. The only thing that bothers me is when we get idiot reporters that have no idea what they're talking about. Different strokes for different folks.

But isn't that what local news is for? I am not saying people should not have access to news...but there really is nothing to report...even in a hurricane, 24/7. That is why I see it as sensationalism...they really are targetting the rest of the country, not the people who are actually in danger.

I have to disagree with the OP......A major hurricane is a Major newsmaker. One way or another it affects everyone.

I can understand if you live in Iowa or Kansas, or Wisconsin, or whatever....you think "this doesn't affect me". But it can.

Maybe it is because I was born in Florida, and still have relatives in Tampa and Ft. Myers......but I have to watch. I want to know where it is headed. I want to be informed.

Just my .02....

Oh, I agree with that, I just don't see any need for continuing coverage 24/7 of the major news networks. I am not saying they shouldn't make updates...but that is not what they are doing.

BINGO! Time for local news to step up.

Besides, you can't count on the national media to give you "REAL" information, they are too busy hyping the darn thing. Do yourself a favor, turn off the crazy coverage and get your info here: www.flhurricane.com

Short updates every hour would be nice, but constant coverage, when all they're doing is re-hashing the same "I don't knows"? Not so much.

I've been watching this hurricane just like most everyone else, but what I'm annoyed about is the constant focus of "what part of Florida's going to get destroyed" (or so the tone seems to be in the media as of late) rather than focusing on what's currently going on in Mexico & Cuba. We're the upcoming story---they're who we need to be focusing on right now. They're just as important as any of us, and they're going through it now, not 3-4 days from now.

I agree that they overdo it. Not so much with weather (a bad storm is news that affects a lot of people, and their coverage could help folks) but with sensational court cases, murders, etc. and my particular pet peeve, all day coverage on terror threats and unattended packages that always turn out to be nothing. What a waste of air time.
