Is it really a Dolphin?

We will be heading back to the BWV next week. Our last stay in December was at the BWV and we had a room facing the Dolphin. After some interesting comments about the look of the "dolphin" on top of the hotel. We decided it looked more like a carp that dove into a sandbar.

Don't get me wrong, I am not putting down the Dolphin. I am sure it is a wonderful place to stay. I just don't think the statues on top of the hotel look like Dolphins.

Just wondering if anyone else thought the same thing?

Heading back in 10 days, yippppppppeeeee.

Eck :D

It is not a Dolphin, it is a fish that is called Dolphin, so you were right thinking it looked more like a fish than a Dolphin, because that is what it is.

Hi Eck45 from Minneapolis! I am in Stillwater, just down the road from you. Well, those "dolphins" are not the prettiest looking things! I think when some people think of dolphins, they think of porpoises instead, and, well we will all agree that they don't look like porpoises! I think the architect wanted those funny, floppy decorations to represent the dolphin fish. I have never personally seen a dolphin fish, so I can only hope the architect was true to the species in his design!!! Well, the "swans" look like swans!

I never new that there was such a thing as a "Dolphin Fish." Well I hope that is what the fish actually looks like. Am a sure most people think of the actual Dolphin when they hear the name, so I thought it was weird that it didn't look anything like it. I will look again in 10 days.

Thanks for the setting the "Dolphin" straight.

;)

LOL

My Dh said the same thing. He said they should call it "The Catfish" instead of "The Dolphin."

If you want to see what a dolphin fish looks like go to:

Okay Manning, I looked at the link. I have now decided that the dolphins at the Dolphin look like dolphins that have had too many wine coolers:D

In my personal opinion, I think the architect should have gone with the dolphins that everyone thinks of when they hear the word dolphin. Not the dolphin fish. The fish looks ugly from mannings picture. The fish doesn't look like it is having much fun either.

But hey, who am I to say???

:p

I'm with you, Eck45, dolphins (the mammals) are far more beautiful creatures than the fish on the hotel. I think a nice sculpture of a jumping dolphin would be more graceful, more like the swans on the Swan.

Not very pretty are they?

I heard that they couldn't use the dolphin for their sculpture because someone at Disney opposed it, that it would be exploiting the plight of the dolphin.;) :p :D

The Dolphins on the Dolphin Hotel in WDW are modeled after the stylized Dolphins which were a symbol of French Royalty from the 14th- 19th Centuries. You may remember that the French heir presumptive often donned the ornamental title of "Dauphin" or Dolphin in English. A Dolphin of this type also appeared in the French Royal Coat of Arms. It's likely that the person who originally designed these "dolphins" never actually saw one in person, merely assuming that because they were aquatic, they must look like fish.

Sorry. History Major.

When they open that new "European History" factory near my house, maybe I can find a management position. Until then you'll find me spurting crap like that above.

During a tour, I was told the "Dolphin" on top of the hotel was really a Koi (pronounced coy). Some kind of fish in the far east.

Don't know if this is true, but it made a good story!!

mmmmm Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi) is my FAVORITE food! yummy grilled! Now I will think of that every time I see the Swan/Dolphin! ;)

Don Knox was in a Disney movie where he turned into a Dolphin. I thought it was modeled after that Dolphin.

I recall having the same thought one afternoon - - taking photographs of the resort, but that thought quickly vanished into the Florida sun along with the frozen concoction I was sipping on!

I suppose it could be a hugely, overweight Dolphin that has just been ridiculously stagnant for these many years, but I'm afraid such is not the case.

Welcome to the Swan/Mahi Mahi? (Lol).

Well done, Thornhill. Keep the history alive.

Wasn't that Don Knotts as the Incredible Mr. Limpit or some such movie???

You know, now that you mention it, the dolphins on top of the resort do look like Mr. Limpit!!!!!
