for 7,000 or less? I am VERY NEW TO ALL OF THIS.. just started looking and very confused..............:confused3

Very unlikely. You'd have to find someone doing a small point resale. A small resale on VAK would probably go for somewhere around $100 a point plus closing costs. From Disney, you need to purchase a minimum of 160 points - which would cost more than double what you want to spend.

You could get lucky, but I'd lay fairly low odds on something like that coming through this year and you being in the right place at the right time to catch it.

Also, for under 7,000, you're looking at only having a little amount of time available at AKV a year. Under 70 points likely per year... I have under 40 points there, that's good for about three nights a year there during the lower two times of year. That's weeknights only and in a studio.

I'm want to add more, but there are so many other things I want to buy DVC-wise also! Now that I'm on the West Coast, the new GCV is highest on my wish list, plus the CR and Hawaii, as both are apparently coming... Oh, the choices! I may end up selling my AKV property just to get more points at another place I'd like to be... Just 'cause my interest in SSR is so much bigger, I'd rather keep that and build around that than AKV.

While that's true, it is very good for a once every 3rd year reservation. When we added on at AKV, we didn't want a huge amount of additional points, because the 380 we currently had have seemed to work well for us for the past 10 years. We did want to make sure we could have a nice AKV stay every 3rd year though, so we took the number of points we thought we would need, and divided it by 3 to get the number of points we would add on at AKV. That came to 69, so a 70 point contract would work well in that same scenario. The real problem is going to be finding a contract of that size and cost. My guess is you are more likely to find 50 and 100 point resales than 70. Also, don't forget that the lower per point cost of resales does not include the higher closing fees.

You should check out the points charts available on this site. Look at the time you like to travel and see if 70 points works for you. You could probably get 5 weeknights in a standard studio for that point amount. But bewared DVC weekends are usually about double the cost of weeknights.

WE would be ok with doint 5 weeknights.... not a problem at all. Guess I will just have to keep checking the resale site often.
Thanks!!

Also, can I buy say at SSR, thne use it at AKL?

yeah, it's theoretically doable.

however, the general advice here is to "buy where you want to stay" or at least "buy where you don't mind staying." during busy periods like holidays or oct-dec, you may get "stuck" at your home resort, so if you hate SSR...buying SSR to stay elsewhere may turn into a source of frustration.

(OTOH, if you can't book 8-11 months in advance, points are points at 7 months, so buy whereever has cheap annual dues.)

We bought SSR and are adding on another 100 there. The incentive is good and I love ssr. I love being close to Down Town Disney. I would like to stay at AKV someday but if it never happens it is ok. So buy where you want to stay.

That price will likely get you maybe 70-75 points at the most yearly. Certainly workable for 5 nights (S-F only) in a studio every year for all but concierge and Premier time (Xmas/Easter). You could likely make it work for for a 1 BR two out of 3 years and a 2 BR 2 out of 5 years for the lower view types if you went at a lower season. IMO that is a very workable plan for the right family that can take advantage of the lower weekday points and can avoid Magic/Premier season. Paying cash on a case by case basis can also supplement such a contract.

But there is another alternative. One that I think will be very workable for studio and 1 BR units especially. That is to buy a non Orlando, non DVC II timeshare and try to trade in every year. It's certainly higher risk with more uncertainty but with the benefit of being much cheaper as well as having a much better set of non Disney exchange options. And if one does so with one of the mini points systems OR a system that allows internal exchanges or internal exchange preference through II, all the better. Marriott and Westin would fit that bill for those with II internal exchange preferences. Bluegreen and Wyndham would be among the leaders that could allow one to get in fairly cheap and still trade in to DVC through II. With both one would need to be careful that the purchase allows II membership as not all would from what I understand. Comparisons' for those options might look something like this. Marriott - Platinum yearly Branson 2 BR lockoff with closing costs around $7K with yearly fees less than $700 (DVC would be $350 roughly on 70 points but much more on the number of points to reserve what we're discussing). Westin could be even less for some properties. Both have much more expensive options as well. One could get Bluegreen non qualified and end up with 25-30K points or qualified (eligible for developer benefits of Silver/Gold, etc) it would be around $10K to get 20K points but the extra costs would be worth it IMO. Dues on BG for 20K points would be close to $1K but would give you 2-3 weeks a year plus bonus weeks and the option of using in their system without exchange fees as well as direct access to RCI though many members can join II as well. Wyndham should be in that ball park as well but others may know more for specific costs, etc.

I would call a few of the resellers and tell them what you're looking for, as many times, low points contracts like that never hit the boards before they are sold. Good luck finding a contract that meets your needs! :thumbsup2
