I'm trying to work on a few designs for us, but clearly I don't have the editing software that a lot of the DISigners have. I cannot for the life of me cut JUST the shape of these images? There is always a white box in the background and then I can't ADD a background to what I'm trying to do b/c there's a white box. Am I making sense?

If someone can cut them, I would really appreciate it. I've tried using GIMP, it's the only program I have for editing stuff like this, but I can't seem to isolate the image and cut the background out. :confused3

I would LOVE to start DISigning, but I can't find a free program, do most of you use photoshop?

I use photoshop elements, but a lot of things that I can do in PSE...I can do in MS Word. I have a thread that you may have already found that teaches you how to DISign using MS Word. Just in case you haven't seen it...here it is:

I haven't figured out how to crop pictures in word...so that is a downside. But it there may be a way to do it...just haven't learned yet. You can make name fills, which are the letters with pictures inside of them in word.

Thank you Dolly! I'll send my email right now! BTW, I made an activity book out of many of your activity sheets for our trip and my dd LOVED them! You are a plethora of creativity! :goodvibes

Thank you so much Dolly! I found them in a google search, I'm hoping it's ok for me to use them as long as I'm not selling them and I'm just using the graphic for personal use! They look GREAT! (I have no idea what you are talking about when you say they are jaggedy on the edges!) :goodvibes

Here is a good site for learning GIMP, I know that they do have some good tutorials on removing backgrounds and even have multiple methods that you can learn.

http://www.gimptalk.com/

As for editing in Microsoft Word, if you open the "Picture" toolbar there is a button that looks like a knife or something that is called "Set Transparent Color". For images like these that have a white background you can use this tool, click on the white area and the background will be removed. Something without a constant background is more difficult.

Thanks for the tip on how to do this in WORD!!! I will post it on the "How to DISign using MS Word thread". If you have more tips...don't hesitate to post them there!!!

Thank you so much for the tips! Can you believe I don't even have MS WORD?!?!? :sad2: I will check out the gimp info though, I'm really enjoying trying to make my own creations, although they pale in comparison to most of the DISigners! :worship:

You can also do this on the pages program on a MAC.

You go to Format---Instant Alpha and touch the color you want to make transparent. You can make it bigger and smaller.

:thumbsup2

Lori, you should consider starting a "how to personalize DISigns using MAC" thread. A lot of people seem to be moving to MAC and don't have Word. I know they would love a few tutorials on how to insert text boxes, etc.

I would be careful with these particular images...... I think that they are non-Disney artwork of Disney characters. The original image that I found has a copyright symbol with the artist's name. I may be wrong but I've never used them for this reason.
