Is it possible to cancel the room reservation and then immediately book again?

Hi everyone, I know this might sound silly, but I want to see if anyone has some suggestion for me.

I have a DVC room reservation in August for two nights using my June use year points. Recently, we bought another direct contract for December use year. I would like to swap out the points for my August reservation using the new points, so that I can sell the June UY contract early, but this is actually harder than I have imagined to do.

Because Disney bought back my 2022 December UY points, I cannot transfer points between two memberships. I waitlisted my August reservation using the new points and hope someone else will cancel, but this seems to be unlikely.

My question is, how risky it is if I cancel my own reservation, say at midnight (hoping less people will be stalking the availability), and then try to book it as quickly as possible using my new points?

Is there any other way that I can do this?

Tread carefully

Availability is live.
Your midnight may be someone's 9:00 pm. Or 6:00am
System may 'need' those nights for : Wait list, or resort may be over sold . Your nights may just vanish.

Can you try to do this? Yes. Have I done it and have it work out! Yup!

Have I done it and lost the room? Sure have…but always had a back up booked or had a back up choice ready.

The most success I have had is when I cancel one night at a time, and then grab it back. Keep doing that to get as many nights as I could.

Time of day hasn’t mattered in my case. Waitlists were what grabbed some of the nights when I did more than one at a time.

Thanks! I might try to do one night at a time. There are availability at other resorts, so that could be my back up plan. But I really want to stay at where I booked. I feel bad selling someone a stripped contract, but I cannot decide if it’s worth the effort of me doing all of this.

I would make sure there were no waitlist…
I have tried to do this to move vacations to another contract, member service to me it was a bad idea as the wait lists would fill before the room would be available to me

That is why I think it worked some times and not others….but, I found the one night at a time was more successful since my guess is one night waitlists are rarer than multiple nights!

Are you sure about this? The transfer rules shouldn’t apply (I’ve always heard and experienced them being waived) when it’s between two contracts you own.

I’m assuming your concern is because the selling points count as a transfer? But I’ve been told by DVC that transferring between my use years don’t count towards the limit or limitations on transferring banked points. Both they allowed me to do last year all by themselves. I didn’t even ask they suggested to do it when they reviewed my account.

I have done it before. I call it a “naked walk”. I do it late at night, but remember that people in Australia and Europe are DVC owners, so nothing is totally safe.

A safer way to do this would be to book two days at any resort with your new points. That way you are covered if this falls through.
Then try the swtcheroo by canceling the old ressie and doing a modify on the new one.

They would need to borrow 2023 points from a Dec UY for an Aug Trip to use since the 2022 points were bought back…and once transferred to the June UY contract, they still would need to be borrowed, which is why transfer is not an option.

That is why they need to move the trip to the Dec UY membership.

Got it, I actually reread the post. Even if they had points they could transfer it wouldn’t work because what they really want is to sell that contract early which can’t happen unless the reservation isn’t on that contract. And the only way to do that is a full cancellation of the current reservation.

Though as a hypothetical will DVC let you transfer borrowed points between your own contracts given they let you transfer banked?

To the OP, I’m not sure an Aug trip matters much right now selling. We are about 60 days out from the end of August so I’m not sure someone would care much given settlement will always be minimum 30 days out plus some extra time for signing paperwork.

Thanks! Member service told me that borrowed points cannot be transferred, so the 2023 December UY points cannot be transferred. But you are right that even if we can transfer, it doesn’t help with selling sooner. I was thinking about leaving some 2023 June UY points for the buyer who will buy my contract, but maybe I should just leave it as it is.

How do you make sure there were no waitlist? Would member service tell you if you ask? I don’t think they would.

They might but the thing about waitlists is that it’s not really one long list.

It’s based on what shows up and what can be filled. So, even if there are not waitlists for the actual dates as a group, there might be for indivial nights. There really would be not easy way for them to tell you if you cancel if it will show back up.

they have told me in the past…..

Now that I have thought about it for a second, the website will also tell you “waitlist only” for your selected nights….

If I saw that, I would NOT try to cancel and rebook

However, to make 100 percent sure you could make sure the room is available online.

Then act really fast…

If I had to do something like this I would do it with member services

Good point. I've had a waitlist for an individual night before. I had already booked the same room type before & after, and waitlisted the 1 night in the middle, and eventually my waitlist came through. Canceling & rebooking definitely sounds risky.

I can understand the annoyance of having it booked, but wanting some help shuffling around the points used to different points that you own. Good luck!

There isn’t much of a premium for points on the current use year in resale. I find it’s usually 7-8 per point of a premium. I’d say not to worry and if you want to make some of that premium back rent your VGF points instead for 15+ a point to make that back.

Ooooo!!!! This is a great idea! I will keep this in mind for future reference! I too ran into an issue where I lost a night or two when I tried cancelling the whole thing and re-booking under another contract.
