Is it possible/necessary to use DAS and Genie+?

DAS will not effect ILL. Although with a DAS you don't need to purchase ILLs. The DAS can be used for those rides too.

You cannot hold 2 DAS return times at the same time for the same ride, so if you preselected a ride and hold a DAS for it, you cannot get another DAS for that ride until you have scanned in for that ride.
If you’re saying what I think you are, this statement is incorrect.

The advance selections are available to persons who do the video conference to sign up for DAS 2-30 days ahead of your trip. Those 2 preselected rides are separate from the return times you can book once you are in the park each day.

The preselects are scheduled and must be used within a specific 1 hour time period. Regular, day-of-visit return times are based on the rides current posted stand-by wait— the time given will be the standby time minus 10 mins. You can come back anytime after the return time that was given, up to the time that either the ride or the park closes.

You do NOT have to redeem your preselect rides before you can book regular DAS return times. Approx. 5-15 minutes you tap into the park, you can start booking day-of return times. You may only hold one of these return times at a time.

Therefore, within a few minutes of tapping in, you could potentially have three DAS times assigned— one day-of return time, and two pre-scheduled advance selection rides. (This is, of course, assuming you have preregistered via video call.)

You can book a day-of return time for a ride you have chosen as an advance selection… and you can hold both of those DAS times simultaneously.
Theoretically, if you use Genie+ (or purchase ILL$) you could even have three return times for the same ride at the same time:
  • A Genie+ (or ILL$) return time
  • An advance selection time
  • A day-of DAS return time
The thing to remember is that the three things above are separate from one another.

tl;dr: DAS now has two parts for guests who have pre-registered via video call. And those two parts are separate from each other. The “one DAS time, at a time” limitation applies only to day-of-vist DAS return times. You can have a advance selection time scheduled, and still book a DAS return time for the same ride even before you’ve redeemed your advance selection time.

We had both in Disney World last month. However, my 2 year old daughter is the DAS holder so we used that for the rides she likes and then genie+ for everything she couldn't ride. I would think that you could do everything at DL with just the DAS, but to me the $20 for genie+ might be worth it for the photos and extra rides.

Have you actually done this? We were told by a plaid that it is not possible to hold more than one DAS for the same ride simultaneously.

It's not exactly the same situation, but I have gone with people who had Genie+ and mobility-related location return time at the same time then got an error trying to scan into Haunted Mansion. The CM at the entrance of the ride didn't know how to resolve the conflict but let us through. Later, when getting a location return time for Jungle Cruise, the CM there was able to clear the error after asking what happened since neither the lightning lane nor the location return time were removed by the HM CM.

My guess is that it's possible to hold the advance and day-of DAS simultaneously but you may get an error when trying use use them, especially if the return times overlap. It should be pretty easy to check in the app if it's possible to book DAS the next time you go with an advance DAS set up.

Yeah, I didn't think this would work smoothly when it comes time to redeem. We have gotten errors before after a ride that we have a DAS for breaks down and we try to use a new DAS for that same ride later on, when we still have an unused ME pass from earlier. The system doesn't like you having two passes for the same ride at the same time.

The advance selection is separate.
My son just got back and said he had no issues.

It would kinda mute the DAS usefulness if the only advance selection times offered to you were in late afternoon/evening.

Clearly, choosing them in advance is already a risk for a lot of people using the DAS. So many disabilities make it so that it’s impossible to say how you’ll feel days or even hours in the future. For me, every hour is a crapshoot. That’s presumably why Advance Selections are separate from day-of DAS return times, and why it’s not necessary to cancel them.

My son reported that he had no issues with:
  • Grabbing a same-day DAS time within minutes of getting past the gates (even though he had advance selections later in the day)
  • Getting a Genie+ time for a ride @ DCA for which he held an advance selection DAS time that same day.
  • And on another day, getting a same-day DAS for a ride he had picked as an advance selection for late in the day. (He began developing a headache mid-morning & didn’t know how late he’d be in the parks).
He assumed it would be a problem, so he stopped and asked about canceling the advance selection at a blue umbrella in the hub, and they told him they couldn’t cancel or change those in any way… but it wouldn’t affect getting regular DAS times. They advised him it would cancel itself when the scheduled hour passed. I’m pretty sure the guest experience CMs got him the regular DAS return for that ride. I know usually if you’re right there, they’ll just do it for you. He didn’t say one way or the other.

:confused3 Maybe they recently changed something… or maybe the CM you spoke to was new, or misunderstood what you meant. Perhaps the ride in question is a “loophole” and he just got lucky (I can’t remember if he said which ride it was, but I know that HM & PoC are his must-do’s or he doesn’t feel like Disney is “done”, so I’d have to guess one of those). Maybe he got pixie dusted, and didn’t realize it. I really can’t say. I can only report his experience.

As far as I know, he only had the one instance of wanting a same-day DAS return time for an advance selection ride. All the others, he did different rides via Genie+ or DAS and waited for the advance selection windows to open on rides he’d picked for that.

He did say Genie+ was limited in it’s usefulness for them, but still worth it because they do lots of Photopass pics. He said he’d tell anyone using it to make sure they use Photopass as much as possible, so “they get their money’s worth.”

I think the fact that the CMs use terminology to describe the two, which is nearly identical (or probably completely identical for some CMs), maybe clouds the issue when they are speaking to guests.

None of those situations was having 2 DAS return times for the SAME ride at the SAME time. That's what is not possible.

I have! We had 3 passes for Na'vi River Journey within an hour. We had an Advanced Selection DAS, a regular DAS, and a genie+. My daughter and I rode 3 times right in a row.

Editing to add that this was March 22nd so fairly recently.

We did this successfully. We had an advance selection for 5:00 for Guardians. I got a same day return time for Guardians at lunch time. We rode then and again at 5:00.
ETA: This was last month.

How were actual wait times with the DAS return? I've heard horror stories of some DAS lines being long for rides that use Genie+ or ILL. I'm really nervous because if something like RSR has a DAS line that takes 30+ minutes to get through, we won't be able to ride it.

Sometimes the LL is 30+ minutes long. It has happened to us several times. At DLR, the most likely long LL lines will be at these rides:

Indiana Jones
Rise of the Resistance
Space Mountain
Radiator Springs Racers
WEB Slingers
Guardians of the Galaxy
Soarin

For the most part, when using the LL, you will have a 5-10 minute wait. However, when a ride experiences a long breakdown, the resulting line can end up quite long upon reopening as everyone floods back in. The best strategy is to avoid those times. With a DAS, you are not tied to a specific window so if the LL line is spilling out way into the walkway, just give it a few minutes and try again later.

When a ride that we have a DAS for goes down, and it turns into a ME pass, we just use it for something else and keep an eye on the app, getting a DAS for the original ride after it's been back up for awhile, in order to allow that crush of people in the LL to work itself out.

We have done it. The pre-selected DAS return times do not stop you from reserving those same rides using the regular DAS system in the park. At least that was the case last month.

Good to know. We have never made use of the advanced DAS because we were told otherwise. Plus, we always visit the park within a couple days of it expiring and just find it easier to renew in person.
