Is it only New England schools that get a winter break in February?

We just get 1 day for President's Day here in NC (Spring Break is the week after Easter), but my brother's kids in GA get the full President's Week off. They have Spring Break in April, I think.

The public schools here have the following days out.

Rosh Hashanah
Yom Kippur
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Election Day
Two days for Thanksgiving
5-7 days for Christmas
MLK Jr.
5 days President's day week
5-7 days for Easter
Memorial Day
Brooklyn/Queens Day

In MN, we don't get President's Week off. Typically, we'll get President's Day. It varies from district to district, but Spring Break can be anywhere from early March to mid-April. It doesn't always coincide with Easter. This year, my kids have March 31-April 4 as their Spring Break.

What's interesting is when I was in school 20+ odd years ago..we used to have a February Break and it was called "Energy Break". Supposedly they tried to time it during the coldest week of the year to save on the heat and lights the school buildings would have to put out. But at the same time, we never had a Spring Break in addition to "Energy Break".

Now we do get out of school June 6. It's my impression that the New England states go to school until late in June. Is that correct? If so, that's probably what we are seeing...you guys have more breaks, but you go later in the school year.

Personally it's psychologically depressing to still be in school after June 1. And I'm a parent, not a student.

Here in Vermont we get the last week in Feb. off. into the first couple of days of March. It has been set up that way for years. It carries over into March because, traditionally, the first Tuesday in March was town meeting day. In some towns it still is. Therefore, the schools started again on the first Wednesday in March.

For years it seemed to connect with Presidents day but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. This is better this way because it always used to be on Daytona 500 weekend which picked up attendance in WDW the following week.

I'm on Long Island. My kids get Presidents week, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday in March, then April 21-25 and then The Thurs and Friday and Monday for Memorial Day. We get out of school June 27th:sad2:

We get the 18th and 19th off but most that work in the school system have in service days on the 19th.

Same here. :thumbsup2 Out East.

It's been almost 10 years since I graduated, but when I was in school here in TN, we got a 4 or 5 day weekend in Feb and the week before Easter. Our county was (is) a bit off from the rest. I went to school in Sevier County, which includes Gatlinburg/ Smoky Mountains, and we had a longer day than everyone else. We had a bunch of snow days built in (because school's cancelled if it's not safe for buses to run in the more mountainy areas), and normally needed them all. If we were over, the Feb break would be taken away to avoid needing to add the days on. I don't ever remember losing the break. In high school our band used the break to head down to WDW and march in a parade in MK.

The county we live in get a week in late sept or early oct (fall break), week at thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Xmas (winter break) a week in Feb (don't know what they call it) and a week in early late march/early april for spring break.
However last I knew most counties were still on the older schedules that don't have the fall or feb breaks and have a longer summer break.

In Maine, the schools always get a week off in February (winter break) and a week in April (spring break). I believe this is true for most of New England, whereas I think most schools outside of New England get a week in March (spring break). I could be wrong, it's happened before.:rotfl:

So, IF you get a week in February (we get the week of the 18-22) what are you doing for fun?

We're going to Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Tucson. I can't wait to see sunshine (I forget what it looks like) and to eat outside, and to wear flipflops, and to not see snow and ice.:cool1:

We haven't seen the sun since Monday! Almost a full week of snow and its snowing again! Another 8+ inchs expected tonight into tomorrow!! Enough is enough!! We had a regular school day Monday, No school Tuesday, Early release Wednesday, 2 hour delay Thursday and should not have had school at all, and a regular day Friday!! Sheesh!! We will be going to school until July! Our trip tp Florida in April is looking better and beter...

To answer your Q: We also have a FEb and April vacation here in NH. I think most of the South and Mid West have a spring break in March, right around Easter but then get out of school earlier than we do May-ish.

Another Long Islander here. Our district gets one week in Feb., four days in March (a Thursday and Friday and then Monday and Tuesday the next week) and a week in April.

Same here. And if we don't use any snow days, the kids will have the Thursday and Friday, plus Monday for Memorial Day weekend.

We get a week off at Thanksgiving, Two at Christmas, One Presidents Week (February) and One at Easter.
