I don't see a problem with it as long as you make sure she doesn't give out ANY personal information. If you're talking about the teen board here on the DIS, it's probably pretty safe. I've never heard of any problems.

edited to say, I reread your original post and didn't catch the first time that she exchanged addresses. I really would discourage her from giving out ANY personal information, even if it is jsut a PO Box.

Unfortunately, I think your husband is right. No teenager should ever give out any personal information on the Internet. If she wants to communicate with someone, do it only on the boards or e-mail.

99.9% of the people, maybe 100% of the people, who post here are just having fun. But, it only takes 1 to cause a problem. A teenager shouldn't put themselves at risk and she may also feel if this site is okay, some other site she likes is okay, too. If someone were looking for a place to hook someone, the "innocent" boards would be a place to go.

The more pieces of info you share, even little ones, could be put together to track someone down. A few weeks ago people here were shocked to see how their homes could be found using Google. It's possible to take just a phone number or a last name and town and figure out where someone is.

Although I think for the most part the teen board here is safe I would never allow my kids to exchange addresses with someone who I didn't know personally. A phone number can usually be traced to an address so also shouldn't be given.

I agree, using Janette's guideline, for a teen. I have given a ton of info on myself here  but am judicious in my address and phone numbers (you might not think so, LOL). I am sure though, with info I have posted, a person could find me, if they wanted to. Sad fact of life.

I agree with your DH too. It is just not safe practice to give out addresses over the internet.

My DD has a friend that did, and the boy came to see her.
She was soooo scared. What really boils my blood is that the girls mother did not care.

Turns out he was mentally unstable. He said he was going to kill her (DD's friend). It was not good.
She has done that twice. I have told my daughter she is not to be hanging around that girl when she does not know the boys.

Myself and another mom have tried to talk sense into this girl.
She does not listen. I am afraid she will be a statistic one day.

Very sad....

I think your DH is right. Every week on the news there is a story about a young person who has given too much information in a seemingly innocent online conversation. Some of these have led to terrible consequences.:(

You have no idea if the person with whom you are corresponding is really who they say they are. People pose as teenagers all of the time to gain the trust of young people online. :(

I'm glad you have a P.O. Box address.

thanks everyone, i guess i have to have a talk with dd....how about the pictures? i see alot of you post those, is that safe?

I'm not sure what you are posting pictures of. If it's a general picture or something in WDW, I think that's fine. I like seeing pictures of people's children but I kind of think that might be questionable. Maybe post it once but keeping it in your signature might not be the smartest idea. I don't know that it is "trouble" but it might not be wise. Kind of like leaving your car unlocked at the mall.
