Is it not "cool" for middle school kids to wear winter coats?

No coats are worn here either! I'm done arguing with my boys (8th & 9th grades.) If they want to stand outside in the sub-zero temperatures in a hoodie, so be it! (although yesterday and today they could've worn shorts, it's on the warmer side) The girls are the same way, just hoodies.

The only times they'll put on a heavy coat and gloves is in the snow.

It was about middle school when my DD's decided lunch boxes were not cool either. Could only do brown bags. Well, now it's not even cool to bring a lunch, so they buy every day!

Lunch boxes/soft bags were done in the last year for my fifth grader. She brown bags or buys depending on the meal. My 8th grader stopped using the the lunch containers in the 6th grade. She doesn't buy that much because there isn't enough time to eat by the time she buys the food.

If it's not that cold and I'm just heading off to school, I will grab my drumline 'hoodie.' It's a guy friend's so it's huge and warm. If I know I'll be outside and won't be able to go home and get my coat, I'll wear it. I love my coat and scarf though!

Nope, coats aren't cool. LOL DD is 13 and practically lives in her hoodies. She wouldn't wear a hat if I paid her.

I can't say I'm much different. I lived in my jean jacket in high school. I never wore anything thicker than that until I was an adult.

My DD 15 had to dress up today for basketball. She wore capri's! It's 35 here today! Whatever I have to pick my battles and this is not one. She did wear a coat, but she got a new coat for X-mas. I guess that it fits in here locker, the lockers are pretty good size.

My DS 16 did not wear a coat today. Usually he wears his North Face Fleece but today just wore a thin sweatshirt like thing. I know at my kids school north face is pretty popular, it was very popular last year, I'm sure that it's on it's way out by now! I do know that the kids also like Mountain Hardward and Marmot. My kids do not have any of those brands,we just do not have the money to buy 250 coats for my teenager!

Are you kidding? Around here it isn't "cool" in the FIRST GRADE !!! I hid all of my granddaughter's fall jackets and believe me, I won NO popularity contests because of it.. LOL :)

By the time my kids reached middle school though I was a firm believer in "natural consequences" (for many things) and if they got cold or they got sick they received no sympathy from us whatsoever.. Some things just have to be learned the hard way..

I never liked wearing a bulky winter jacket to school because it barely fit in my locker. Maybe that's the reason. I grew up in Minnesota and it wasn't uncommon for me to wear a hoodie to school in the winter.
My son told me that was a problem for him. He said that he needed a coat that would fit in his backpack because there's no room in his locker and nowhere else to put a coat. That's a shame.

DS in 6th grade has worn his winter jacket this year on the chilliest days. (We're at 72 degrees today!) :faint: When he gives me flack about not wearing it, I remind him...we're NOT in FL anymore. You wear a jacket in winter.

Lunchbox is still okay with him. But it's just a plain red squarish one. Not a kid's with cartoons, etc.

My boys 22 & 17 were yelling at my 14 yr old daughter who is a freshman. She runs out the door with just a hoodie on. I laughed, they both sounded like 2 old men.

I know this isn't a laughing matter, but my daughter says the same thing, there is no room in her locker and the lockers are starting to smell cause of all the wet winter coats. She says she knows of some people that never wash their coats. I wash winter coats at least once every 3 weeks.

Even before we got to the lunchbox issue, I informed ds I wasn't figuring $55+ a month into the budget so he could look "cool", LOL!! He gets to buy 1x a week if he's lucky.

Tell me about it...........3 kids X $2/day = $30/week :earseek: Extra singles & $5's go into the lunch money envelope every week!

Yup my son wears his hoody when it is 80 or 20 and anywhere inbetween... crazy I tell ya! he's been like this since he was in the 4th grade.

We have the "winter" rule too. My DS tries to sneak out in just a hoodie, but I usually catch him. He says the lockers are too small too. I don't know...they don't seem much smaller than when I was in school.

By the way, he hates his winter coat (which he LOVED last year) because "it's too poofy".

DS12 always wears his hoodie to school. It's not worth the fight in the morning. If it's below 30 I will make him wear his winter coat. He gets driven to school and dropped at the door and most days picked up. The other days he has to walk a few blocks to meet me at the element. school so he's really not out in the cold that long.

Granted we live in Florida--but I didn't understand the kids biking to school in shorts and a t-shirt when it was low 30s and highs only to go to the low 50s.

Brrrrrrr.

I didn't read all of this thread but I'm 12 and in 7th grade and I wear my hoodie everyday. For 3 reasons. 1. The lockers are litterally this big:

so coats don't fit. It's hard enough getting a bookbag, lunch box, and a hoodie in there. And on Monday and Tuesday I have gym. So plus a gym bag. It doesn't fit. 2. I'm outside ( all together ) 5-10 minutes tops. 3. Unlike a coat, you can wear it to classes. So if I get cold I just put it on and I'm fine. It's small and it's easy to carry ( if you tie it around your waist ).
So I don't think it's a matter of being cool, I think it's just easier. For me, anyway.

ETA: Ok the lockers aren't {} that big. I had way more space but it didn't work when I posted. Their probably the size of the space wear my message is. From the edge of my Steeler icon to the end of the space that has the message in it.

I have noticed that around here lately too (if you notice where I'm from LOL), and we have had some bitterly cold days. Before Christmas we didn't get above 0 for 3 days, before windchill. When I pick up my 6th grade ds, I notice a lot of kids have no coats. Also, when I go shopping I notice it too. My son is not cool however, and he wears his coat zipped to his chin every day. When it's warmer, I remind hiim to not zip it so high, because I don't want kids to make fun of him.

He also takes a lunch box every single day, he says the lunchlines are too long, and he won't have time to eat. It's just solid blue though, no pictures on it.

Nope not cool at all. I don't like to wear them at all, but my mum makes me. And it's nice that she does, becasue my car is freezing in the morning :)

When I was in school here in FL it used to be un-cool to use an umbrella if it was raining, even pouring. :confused3

Same over here... it was not "cool" to use an umbrella. Most of the time we were all soaking wet, but we didn't care. :umbrella:

Nope totally not cool, my kids never want to wear coats either. I say fine, and you better hope your bus never breaks down! ACtually I rarely wear a coat myself, not unless it dips down under 30 degrees. I just put gloves on. I hate wearing a bulky coat when I'm driving.

:jumping4: When I was in Highschool waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back a long time ago(class of '94 ) I hated to wear a jacket it was always a hooded sweat Jacket(weren't quite "Hoodies" then) or a chamois shirt I had filched from my dad's closet (come to think of it most of my wardrobe senior year belonged to my dad. Hmmm so that's why he kept wondering where all his t-shirts were:) Now that I have kids I have the same fight with my kids, but with the new Micro fleece and better technology in clothing I truly think it takes some really low temps to make kids feel cold. That being said, as an adult I still hate to wear a Jacket and I myself normally wear a layer or two with a fleece pullover, but I do live in Virginia Beach and to me it does not get cold all that often (cold to me is 18degrees with a wind chill factor of below Zero, today is 66 out and I would wear shorts if not for the fact that people would really really look at me ;) Oh and for the kids in the cold climates a lot of the Down jackets will squish down really good into a ziploc bag but of course that make all the down closer together and not nearly as warm but it is an idea. Some of the down jacketrs even come with an option to do that with a built in zipper pouch. Phew this was really really Looooong.
