Is it (mentally) difficult to switch from hopper to MYW tickets?

Tl;dr Has anyone, who normally buys hoppers, purchased MYW tickets and not missed hopping?

We booked our hotel last night so now we are moving on to the next big decision. We always buy Park Hopper tickets but we have been contemplating getting MYW tickets since we will have our (newly turned, hooray for birthdays trips!) 2 year old with us.

We want to spend time at the hotel and in general have a more relaxing trip. If we did MYW we would do 6 day tickets. We would do 5 days for hopper.

I am just so use to knocking out a park in the morning and then strolling around the second park. I am not sure if it will be an easy transition or not. But in the same breath I would hate to get the hoppers and not take advantage of the hopping.

FYI, park hoppers are MYW tickets - all tickets are MYW tickets, for that matter. If they don't have the hopper or WP&M option, they're called MYW base tickets.

I can't say if it's hard to make the switch, but if your two year old is like ours, it's very hard to actually take advantage of hopping. We had hoppers last trip (our first) and didn't use them even once despite having 9 day tickets. Our toddler was just NOT going for it. He did parks from 9-3 or 4 and at his pace we didn't accomplish that much on any day. (Boneyard took 90 min at AK, and he wanted to stomp on puddles the day it rained so we took a 1 hour running around break, for instance.)

Thanks for the clarification I usually skip past that section so I just made the wrong assumption on terms. Edited to fix terminology.

This is what makes me nervous to bite the bullet on the hopper. He is a go go go baby But if he falls in love with something it is difficult to move on to the next activity (ie my grandfather has big farm equipment and all J wanted to do was "sit tractor". He would bring whomever he choose as his "victim" their jacket, hat and shoes and direct them to the door.).

If it wasn't going to be such a busy time it would be a no brainer to get hopper since we could start at one park, take a break and then go to a different park without worrying about crowds.

You can always add the hopper at any time. I found that really reassuring, and I think it helped me mentally. Knowing that we COULD hop if we wanted to, and be out no more money than if we had originally bought the hoppers, allowed me to just go with the base ticket. And we didn't end up hopping on that trip.
(This year we have APs, so we obviously can hop, and we have done it a few times)

We have always bought hoppers and have thought about not before to save in the budget, but just can't image not being able to hop around as we like. For us the hoppers have been great with the kids. That way if they would get tired of something early in the day or one park was too busy, we would just venture over to another park. And it allows us to make sure and get in all the evening events we want - our kids are huge into the fireworks/night shows.

Not mentally tough at all. Buy the tickets without the hopper option. If you decide you want to hop, add it while you are there. I suggest going without and see how the trip goes. If needed, there is no difference in the cost if you pay early or upgrade so nothing lost.

We had one trip where we never hopped and saved the $$. It's a good feeling. The second, we decided dinner at Epcot was a must and we hopped a little after. Upgraded at the resort as soon as we decided we wanted to hop. Good luck!

I've always got hoppers and actually just cancelled ours for this upcoming trip. After going through our plans there was only one day I could see even a remote possibility of hopping between ADRs and FP+s and even then the chance was slight. I decided I'd rather save a few hundred and spend some more time at the resort if needs be that day.
Our first family trip I don't think we ended up using our hoppers at all and the 2nd we only used them once I think, so we aren't huge hoppers with the kids anyway.

Do note if you decide to cancel them later in the 45 day window they charge you the $50 change fee lol.

We did a lot of hopping on our last trip. We did three parks on one day! We only had one day where we didn't hop at all. For us it was definitely worth it on that trip. We probably could have managed without though if we did some more planning. For us though it made it a lot easier to be able to go to a different park for dinner/nighttime entertainment. And my kids LOVED hopping and riding the different transportation from park to park. I think my son counts the monorail as one of his favorite rides. My daughter was just shy of two when we went so about the same age as your son. She fell asleep in the stroller every day often while we traveled from one park to another. We also intentionally hopped between parks with easy transportation for the most part. So we took the boat from HS to Epcot or the monorail from Epcot and MK.

We did regular base tix this last trip after hopping the last few times. DH and I agreed that we did miss it, although upgrading probably wouldn't have been the best choice this time around.

Everyone says it's no big deal NOT to hop with kids, but we liked it better if you plan to take a break. On the days we did a mid-day break it would have been nice to head over somewhere else rather than the same place. But it depends on your schedule. We were offsite the last two times and it was fine except for MK. Parking and getting to MK more than once a day is too much hassle for us. We will either hop or stay onsite next time.

We initially did NOT buy hoppers for our trip last August - that would have been our first time w/o them, except we added them our 2nd day there lol. I had planned our days so that we wouldn't need them. We were just trying to save a few bucks but realized once there that we didn't want to be tied to the same park each day, especially since the kids prefer 2 parks over the other 2.

So, my answer is yes, it's difficult to go from being used to hoppers to not having them unless you make a commitment to stick to one park; but as pp's have said (and like we did) it's totally easy to add them once you get there if you find you just can't handle it :rotfl:

Sometimes we hop, sometimes we don't and we enjoy the trip either way. With a two year old and six park days I would be fine to skip them. Instead of hopping some resort time is probably a good idea for a long trip with a toddler.

You can always go with the MYW base ticket and upgrade to a PH while you are there if you find that you miss the flexibility it offers. Just go to the hotel concierge desk at any point during your stay to upgrade. It's really easy.

Last trip was Sept. 2013 and we decided against spending the extra for park hoppers. We never missed them. By the time we were done in the parks we were ready to relax at the resort.

If I had only young kids, I might not park hop. A little one can find tons of things to do in one park for the day. Especially if you don't leave for an afternoon break.

If you are planning for an afternoon break at the resort, or have some older ones, than park hopping makes sense.

We have older kids and they have a few favorites at MK, but certainly not a whole days worth. So we hit MK in the morning and then go see the countries of Epcot in the afternoon. Thankfully, we had the money to buy the 10 day non-expiring park hoppers a few years ago, so we are still working on those.

We haven't "hopped" in several years. At this point, I doubt we'll ever go back. As mentioned above, you can always add it if you find the base doesn't work for you.
