Is it me or do people/families not eat dinner anymore?? VENT

I like to learn something everyday and what I learned today is:
Ask a question on the budget board for advice but DO NOT make such an observation about ANYTHING because you will possibly get RIPPED to shreds for it. So entirely unnecessary in my opinion. Note to self: When you see an innocent thread that you could attack by listening to the little devil on the left shoulder, do the right thing by listening to the little angel on the right shoulder and be kind or say nothing. Kindness, pass it on.:goodvibes

Well, I think you are overgeneralizing here. I don't think the OP made just an observation. She implied that because people weren't eating dinner together between 6-7:30 pm, families would be falling apart.

If she had just made an observation, I think the thread would have been different (possibly). But she went beyond the observation with her "VENT" and commentary.

If she had said, "You know, I notice that people don't seem to be eating dinner together anymore. What do you do at home?" it would have been better.

If it matters, we eat a homecooked meal almost every night and mostly together. I am lucky enough that my mother and father live with us. My mother cooks for us every night (my house, my food, my family). Everyone eats together at around 6-6:30 pm except me. I don't get home until around 7:30 pm and I just warm up dinner. On the nights DH and DD have karate (2 nights per week), we eat late, around 9 pm. My mom and dad will eat around 5 pm and usually my DD will eat something too. DH and I will eat late. Once in awhile we might pick up chinese food for dinner. On Fridays or Saturdays we might order pizza.

Cool, my son just got into the Air Force ROTC at school. They tell me that it won't interfere with football if he wants to play, however I am assuming that if he wanted to join the competition team it would. That is something he may be interested in also, and in that case football may not last, if he even makes the team

For my son's all his competitions were on Saturdays during the Fall and the spring. He has a competition coming up so he won't be able to ref soccer that day but he will be having fun.

The girls and I did go to one of his competitions down in Tennessee in October as we were heading from there to WDW for Fall break. It was fun to watch but a lot of hurry up and wait like typical military.

Does it not occur to you that not everybody eats dinner so early? I couldn't imagine eating dinner as early as 6 or 7. We serve dinner at my house never before 8.

Wow, I can't imagine eating dinner at 8:00... that's bedtime for us. lol... we regularly eat at 5:00ish, sometimes 4:00. I grew up that way.

I have some of my best conversations in the car with my kids. Because it is one to one time. I drive and they just talk, about their day, abut what is going on in their lives. This type of conversation doesn't happen at the dinner table for us, there are 5 and things don't get that personal, but in the car one on one is great.

This is how it is with our family. We all have fairly long commutes so the main conversations happen in the car. Tonight my 4 year old son talked my ear off about his entire day at preschool.

I don't sit down and eat with my kids as I am usually getting my husband's bucket ready for work or cooking while they are eating. My kids eat as soon as they get off the bus at 4. DH, my youngest DS and I usually eat our 'supper' at 3 or 3:30 since he has to leave at 4:15 for work.

When I was growing up my parents and I never had a sit down meal together at a table. It was either we're all sitting in the living room eating or they were in the living room and I was in the kitchen. Never killed me any to not have us all together.

Well count me in as one of the families that sit down at the supper table with my family every evening to eat. Never at the same time every night because of work but we do manage to get together every night to hash out the day and eat. We take eating seriously..LOL
I have to admit though a lot of times it is something brought home...fish from the local fish camp, pizza, chicken from KFC but we do all try to sit down together. For us it's the only time we have to touch base and really talk we have done this for so long it's a no brainer, everyone calls me every single day to see when supper is being served and we all get together and wait on one another and eat. No man is left behind, haha.
