Is it hard to get ADRs during free dining periods?

How hard is it to get ADRs during free dining, particularly during the end of August? Do the parks/restaurants tend to be more crowded than they would be during the rest of the summer?

We've gone the past 2 Augusts and are heading back this Aug 19-29. I made my ADRs as soon as my window opened and got everything we wanted. Last year, however, when the ADR window was shorter than the current system, were had a real hard time getting seats during usual dinner hours. Most of our dinners were after 7:30 or so, with CM being completely booked. If you are planning on trying to get into Character Meals without an ADR, be prepared to wait and possibly be turned away.

The parks do not tend to be a lot more crowded. The restaurants do.

If you wait too late, the ADR's are hard to get

I would get them soon. Now that FD has been released, the best times will fill up quickly.
