Is It Cost-Effective to Buy Refillable Mugs for a 5-Night Trip?

We'll be at AKL in 3 weeks. We normally stay in DVC accommodations w/a fridge so we never buy mugs. But for this trip, we are thinking we'll get them for the 3 of us.... Is it worth it for 5 nights? Any opinions would be appreciated!! :)

I think it is. The mugs cost $11.99 - drinks are about $2.50/ea -- If you only fill them up once in the morning and once at night, that's worth $5/day, so on the 3rd day you would start saving.

Without a doubt they are worth it!! Just as JetMom has said, by the 3rd day you would be drinking free... they way we are, by the next day, we are drinking free::yes::

Thank you! I'll set aside the $$ for them. :)

Depends upon what you're comparing . . .

If you would otherwise buy fountain sodas at 2.50 each, then you'd "break even" after your fifth soda.

On the other hand, if you're like me and would never pay 2.50 for a soda but would rather bring sale-purchased sodas from home (at about .20 per can), then you'd have to drink more than 60 sodas before "breaking even". Bringing your own sodas has other benefits too: You have the soda of your choice (if you drink caffeine-free, you know that it's not always available). You can bring your drink to the bus stop and toss the can (whereas you would have to finish your mug-drink in the room or tote it around all day).

The mugs are also a nice souviner with the added benefit of free coffee or soft drinks in my opinion.

Also, they are putting frigs in all the moderates and deluxes. You should request one at check-in (if they don't have AKL completed by then) and they are not charging for it.

I like them for their nice souvenier quality as well. We will definitely be getting ones of DH and I but we will see about DD.

I've heard conflicting reports on this -- we're staying on DVC points at AKL and the DVC Member Services rep said we'd have to pay for a fridge. Of course, this wouldn't be the first time at Disney that the right hand didn't know what the left was doing ...

Maybe I'll set the money aside and then if we get the fridge, we can make a quick run to Winn Dixie and use the money for pop and bottled water; if it's not free, we might as well get the mugs. :)

Depends on how much soda, coffee, etc. that you drink. In our family, only my dh gets one. He drinks lots of coffee and soda. But my boys and I are big milk drinkers, so we don't get them. (Now if they let you fill them with milk-we'd get 5 of them for sure! LOL) I like them as souvenirs too. :)

Last year we stopped at a grocery store and bought a 24 pack of pop.

We left seven days later with 22 cans left. Considering it was in our room, convienient and accessible (and cold - we are DVCers too), we can't possibly drink enough to make mugs worthwhile!

I think the question is if you will have opportunity to use it.

Our last two trips we were far away from food courts - we never went to the food courts from our room and took them back to our room. And I refuse to carry it to the park with me. Not worth it for us.

This time we are staying at POFQ - no matter what room we get, it will be convenient to the food court. I can see myself using them this trip and saving a bundle.

It depends on what your habits and preferences are.

It depends on how much soda and coffee drink if the refillable mugs is a good deal.

I know me and mom is getting them because I can drink 10.00 dollars worth a soda in one setting in the mouring. Then mom has soda and coffee for breakfeast. So it's a good deal for us.

If don't drink alot soda or coffee then the refillable mugs is not a good idea.

I know next trip we traveling by bus so I won't have room to bring my own drinks with me so I will get the refillable mug.

I don't even consider the "souvenier value" because I don't care to have an odd cup rattling around in my cabinet.

Free fridges would be nice; however, we bring an ice cooler. Refilling it takes five minutes per day -- no problem!

People, People, People

We are all on vacation & to be able to have the choice between numerous different types of soda & drinks with ice is well worth the cost of the mug.

What is a few $'s more when you look at the total cost of the trip.

I too would never pay $2.50 for a soda, but for my kids I will.

At the risk of sounding like a big cheapskate, I must confess that our family of four (me, DW, DD7, DS$) all share a mug each time we vacation at WDW. We sit near the soda fountain; by doing so we save $30+ per vacation.

We always buy them, I personally love the mugs for souvenirs. Wait and see how far away you are from the food court and decide. One trip we were so far away, we carried one mug with us and got pop or hot chocolate on the way back to the room after the parks. The next year we were much closer and used it a lot more.

I bought one at AKL just because I wanted to have it, not necessarily to save money. My room was just about as far away from Mara's as you could get, so it was a real pain to go get it filled.

Also the mugs do not hold that much liquid if you are putting ice into them.

So I guess my advice would be to buy them if you want to but not necessarily to save money. If your room is further away they actually are quite inconvenient.

I say that it is worth spending the money. The last time we went, the mugs were 12.00 each, and I know that by myself, I sepnt more that 12.00 on drinks at the resort.
