I know this is a really unnecessary question but is it common to pass other ships in the Inside passage in Alaska? Thanks! IM talking cruise ships btw. Not other smaller ships. Thanks!

When we sailed in 2013, we had a Norwegian ship, I believe it was The Sun close to us from at least mid way through the week until we were back in Vancouver.

We passed a HAL ship heading the other way when we were on our last sea day in 2014. I just looked at my pictures, it was the Zuiderdam.

You will see 2 or three ships a day, especially when docked. Check out marinetraffic.com to see the ships going up and down the coast.

Ive already got the app! We will Have some busy port days!

a quick peek at marine traffic just now showed over a dozen cruise ships in 'the passage' ..... a busy place this time of the year.

there a 5 good sized ones heading toward Jun' .... but spaced over 10 miles apart ....

Keep in mind that app uses data when outside home. I was suggesting to check now at your computer.

For the cruises that originate in Vancouver, there is a choke point the first and last nights of the cruise, at Seymour Narrows on the northeast corner of Vancouver Island. There are swift currents there when the tides are changing, so ships need to go through on a slack tide. That, in turn, means everybody goes through at certain times, and tend to play follow-the-leader through the narrows.

We sailed June 19-26, 2017. Of ourse, we followed a ship out of the Port of Vancouver. We saw another ship coming out of Endicott Arm as we approached (about 11:15 am). I recall seeing another ship at a distance on sea day. Other than that, my DH nor I can recall any others. Tons of small boats though, including two that liked crossing our wake the night before arriving back in Vancouver.
