...to say Happy Memorial Day?

Having grow up with grandparents who were very active in the American Legion and participated in many veterans events, I say no.

I've heard it SO many times today though.

I'd be interested in the thoughts of others on this.

Thanks!

It's stupid, just like all the Memorial Day sales at stores.

it's probably not appropriate, but I find that most people don't think about what they are actually saying.

Like the disease/condition research places manage to put out slogans that basically say "support breast cancer" or "support the juvenile diabetes association". And I just want to say WHAT?????? I don't think you mean what you are saying, people....

Happy Memorial Day is sort of like saying Happy Funeral in my book.

I don't think you should morn memorial day. If I died in the line of duty I would want people to rejoice and celebrate. You aren't celebrating that I'm dead you are celebrating that I gave my all for you. So no I don't think happy memorial day is offensive but yes it does sound dumb like support cancer!

Honestly I think most military people would feel honored if you were passed out on the sofa in their honor!

It's become a commercial holiday. Plain and simple.

I recently saw a picture of a store that had out "Happy Yom Kippur" cakes. The irony in that was just ridiculous to me.

I cringed when I heard a newscaster on a major network talk about celebrating Memorial Day. I think we can celebrate the lives of those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice, but the day itself should be a day of remembrance, honor, and thanks.

My grandpa, who served in the military for nine years, usually says Happy Memorial Day. People have asked him before why he says that, considering he served for such a long time, and he always tells them "I'm celebrating my friends' selfless sacrifices to give me the freedoms I enjoy today."

Happy Memorial Day to me equals Happy Memories Day.

Memorial Day isn't just a day to remember Veterans, it's a day to remember anyone who's passed. I'd rather have happy memories of those people than somber ones so anyone saying Happy Memorial Day to me gets a pass.

My dad was heavily involved in the VFW when I was growing up. I was actually Poppy Girl twice. I remember the parades, how somber people seemed to be.

According to the radio station I listen to, "Happy Memorial Day" is an inappropriate thing to say. Memorial Day is a day to remember the ultimate sacrifice that the men and women in the service have given for our country. Veterans' Day honors those that serve now, but it is appropriate to thank those current service members on Memorial Day.

I don't think by saying "Happy Memorial Day" that anyone is trying to say "woohoo... I'll glad people died so I can get a day off". It's a day where we remember those who have died before us, and frequently we enjoy spending it with those who are still with us.

We honor our country, we spend time with loved ones, and sometimes we even boost the economy in the process (which I consider to be a good thing).

So yes, I hope everyone had a Happy Memorial Day :flower3:

(And I have no idea what's wrong with supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Association :confused3 I get what was meant by "support breast cancer" but I think it's obvious what people mean when they say it)

Who are you going to say it to? Someone who is deceased??

You would be correct -- many well-intentioned people confuse Memorial Day, a day to honor those who died in service to our country with Veterans Day, a day in November that honors all veterans, both living and deceased.

Hey...me too! 1982 and 1984! My DD got to do it last year. Kind of helps that my grandma is the poppy chairperson.

Thanks for the input everyone!

do you celebrate memorial day? then why cant you have a happy memorial day?

This is probably it. No one seems to understand what Memorial Day is about anyway. I suppose getting excited about veterans isn't a terrible thing, but it's sad that no one gets the reason for the day. This one bugs me every year.

Similar to my son who is going to college this fall. One of the requirements is that he complete an online "sexual assault course" over the summer. He was like (jokingly) "all right! We learn how to do sexual assault!" Think they could have worded it a little better for teens!
