The U.S. general who was in charge of Baghdad's notorious Abu Ghraib prison said on Saturday she had met an Israeli interrogator in Iraq, a controversial allegation likely to irritate many in the Arab world.

A U.S. military spokesman in Washington said he had no information and an Israeli official denied Israel was involved.

Brigadier-General Janis Karpinski, who was responsible for military police guarding all Iraqi jails at the time prisoners were abused by U.S. troops there, told the BBC she met the Israeli at a Baghdad interrogation center.

"He was clearly from the Middle East and he said: 'Well, I do some of the interrogation here and of course I speak Arabic, but I'm not an Arab. I'm from Israel'," she said.

"My initial reaction was to laugh because I thought maybe he was joking, and I realized he was serious," said Karpinski who has been suspended from her command for failings at Abu Ghraib but has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

An Israeli security source told Reuters: "Israel was not and is not involved in the interrogation of anyone in Iraq."

Israeli involvement in Iraq could anger Arabs who accuse Washington of favoring the Jewish state in its conflict with the Palestinians and in wider disputes with its Arab neighbors.

Israel has denied similar reports in the past of involvement in U.S. operations in the Middle East. Last month, it denied a report in the New Yorker magazine that it was training Kurdish fighters in Iraq to counter Shi'ite militias there.

So is there Israeli involvement in Iraq ??

A general who is in the doghouse over the way she ran a prison makes a statement that is not substantiated by anyone...and the BBC chooses to publish it with out further investigation. And to what purpose does the BBC publish this unsubstantiated piece of "information"?

jennyanydots would that be the same as the unsubstantiated information about Weapons of Mass Destruction ??

Is there a link to the story?

I just like going to the source too, I appreciate the information, but its hard to discuss in real life when all I say is "it was on the internet"

(and for the Scout story, I would've never brought it up if another poster hadnt provided links to the news source)

Thanks

Ok, she claims she met "an Israeli" at an "undisclosed facilty".

I live on Long Island. I can introduce you to half a dozen "Israelis" -- who now are American citizens.

My friend who lives in Tel Aviv can introduce you to a dozen people of Israeli citizenship who are ethnically Arab.

The presense of "an Israeli" -- no name, further identifican -- means ...what?

What nastiness is this general trying to raise to get the spotlight off her abominable behavior?

I don't mean to speak for JD, but no, it's not the same because there is evidence of WMDs.

Ever thought shes telling the truth - how many private security firms are working for the U.S Gov. in Iraq ???

I know that it would not be PC nor would the Arabs like it, but I think it would be wise to get the Iraelies to help us. Just my view but I think we can learn some things from them.

Well I don't know but it would sure be a good idea, don't ya think? I don't care how we get information out of these terrorist cowards but the sooner we do, the better things will be! And no, I don't have a problem putting them in dog collars either.

A discredited general alleges she met an "Israeli" at an undisclosed location and Van Helsing immediately draws the conclusion that the Israeli government was involved in interrogating prisoners at Abu Ghraib. 2+ 2 =5.

Sheesh, her "blame Israel for Abu Ghraib" isn't even original:

Honest reporting
