Is is just me or is San Angel (Mexico table service) just not that great?

I left a scathing review of this place on another post but I'm happy to share our horrible experience again. We were there last September (2007) for my DH's birthday dinner (on the free dining). Our waiter was so rude to me - we should have just left but I felt the same as you - were weren't "technically" paying for it and it was my DH's birthday so I was trying not to make a big deal of it. Long story short, I ordered the Mahi Mahi and asked that the sauce not be spicy. The waiter told me I came to the wrong place and I couldn't get the sauce w/o the spice. So I said just ask the chef to do whatever he can w/o the spice (I have an ulcer and can't eat spicy foods). Well, the guy brought out a piece of dry, cooked fish with nothing on it. I was totally deflated by the sight of it. I asked him if I could get anything to moisten it up and he offered ketchup! Ketchup - can you believe it?! So at that point I asked for the manager and explained my dilemma. He went to the kitchen and came back with a bowl of the sauce that comes with the fish, EXCEPT IT WASN'T SPICY. Then he had the nerve to tell me that I should have asked for it in the first place! Obviously it wasn't his fault - it was his employee's fault but at that point I lost the will to argue. Suffice it to say that we will NEVER go back and I am usually one to give things a second chance especially since people are individuals. That surly waiter just didn't like the fact that I didn't want spicy food - like it was a personal affront to him ;) So he went out of his way to be an unhelpful jerk and for me, the memory of that may ruin any attempt to try it again. But hey, that's just me. Funny too - my husband's steak was delicious and not spicy at all so I wish I had ordered that.

Anyway, you're not the only one who has experienced bad service there. At the time I chalked it up to free DDP (at that time the tip was included). Maybe he felt good to be able to be a jerk to someone because he knew he would be getting the tip anyway. But I guess removing the automatic tip hasn't necessarily made things better so who knows?

We love Mexican food all types(even taco bell,ok now thats not much mexican there:rotfl2: ) Ive been wanting to try san angel for awhile, hopefully we will be able to this March:cool1:

It was too dark for me. I couldn't read the menu and I had my glasses. The food choices didn't interest me. We were on the CP package, and thought it would be OK, but we were wrong.

The atmosphere/ambiance can't be beat-- the best in all of WDW.

The service has always been horrible.

The tables are way too close together.

The food is hit-or-miss.

I can't recommend it, but I can't NOT recommend it, either. It's nice to try every now and then.

I think all the seating at Disney Is a little to close:grouphug: but I think its for a purpose, its to bring every one together some like it some do not. It sounds kind of uncomutable, but you get use to It Its kind of Intersting to meet others from around the country and world. For you that have never been you can always walk in and see the Invirovment before eating.

We ate there last september(free dining) it was def the worst meal we had while on property

( I work in retail management so i am very forgiving to problems with service{ If you are in my field you would understand)

Awesome ambiance but the food is pretty much horrible. If you made tacos at home and knew what you were doing It would be about as good as this place. I enjoyed maya grill alot more

just my .02

My friends and I ate at Mexico on our trip a while back and were dissapointed in the experience. Sure the place is gorgeous inside, but that doesn't make up for the lack of good service. Here is just a short list of the things we didn't like:

1) Got there 5 mins early (ADRs) but were told to wait in a long line for 20 mins.
2) When we reached the hostess we were practically chastized for being late (We were in line!!). They were very rude.
3) Waited another 40 mins to be seated while seeing people who arrived AFTER us be seated first.
4) After being seated, it took FOREVER to see a waitress.
5) Waitress NEVER got my drink correct. I asked for regular coke and got diet EVERY TIME I tried to get a new one.
6) Food took at least an hour to get to us from when we ordered it.
7) My food was the wrong thing. (By this time I didn't care. We had been there nearly 3hrs already.)
8) All the food was cold.
:headache: :headache: :headache:

I could say more but I'll leave it at that. If we hadn't been on the Free DP I would have really complained, but since our food was essentially free I just got over it. Well...sort of.

My question is this: has anyone else out there had THIS bad of an experience with them? Was it just bad luck? It was a Thursday evening in September. Did we miss the good chefs or what? Will be checking back soon to hear your comments.

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience. DW and I have eaten there twice for dinner and both times had great service and food.

However, I will agree that there can be a long line just for checking in and it seems that the hostess is not on the ball when it comes to finding your name on the list on their computer. I had to find it for them and point to it on the computer screen the first time that we ate there. Similar situation the second time.

We just ate there December 14, and all 3 of us thought it was the best food we had at any of our table service meals at WDW. We also had great service. DH and I both thought the tortilla soup and Mole Poblano were terrific. You have to realize going in that they don't have your typical tex-mex or chain type Mexican restaurant food. They don't have things like tacos, burritos, enchiladas etc. I think maybe a lot of people go in there and are disappointed because it is not the Mexican food we are used to getting. I think they are trying to do an "upscale" version of Mexican food and it does have a pretty limited menu. I would recommend getting on AllEars and taking a look at the menu before you go. We did have to wait about 10 minutes for our table, but that was the only thing. The atmosphere can't be beat.

I love the San Angel Inn myself. In our last few trips including the upcoming Jan trip, we eat there on our last night

Don't be offended, but if you have an ulcer why did you choose a Mexican restaurant?

That is me, only been twice about 3 years apart. Remember thinking everything was blah, lights too dark, etc. but give it a chance if our faves are booked. FWIW.
