We are looking at trying an II exchange for next spring break. Nothing is available yet. Have you used it in the past and been successful waiting?

My other thought is to give it a try until the 7 month window is approaching and then switch to a DVC if nothing is found.

Generally, owners can't deposit time into II until a year out at the very earliest, and many don't deposit until their annual fees come due---usually in December or January. So, you may be a bit early for a March/April trip.

Our Kauai exchange matched at a little over 6 months out which is what the CMs told me is common for Hawaii.

We used the II exchange to go to Maui in January of '07. I was flexible on the properties but not the dates, so I gave them a list of about 10 resorts to watch, and they came back with a match exactly one year ahead (Jan '06). We had a fabulous week in Maui and had zero problems whatsoever. :cloud9:

We didn't have luck for this past Feb vacation but are trying again for next April. We're trying about 6 properties in south FL and Caribbean.

MS said that if a match happens, it's about 6 or 7 months out. So we'll give it to 7 months, then switch it to DVC.

I'd love to hear of success stories using II - locations, # of months out, etc.

Alot of matches occur 6 months or less, alot about 3 months prior to your travel destination. If you are requesting a high demand week, or resort your chances will be slimmer and may take longer to fulfill. Its like playing a game of chicken.......who is going to blink first you or II.

This is the best description I've heard and so true. :rotfl:

I was actually calling to cancel a few of the weeks I had listed when the CM told me we received a match that morning.

The good news you can add and subtract weeks/resorts from your search anytime without loosing place.

While I'd agree that many deposits occur at 12 months or after, many others are earlier. That's especially true for Marriott's which are some of the best choices in II. I'd be looking for any Marriott a full 14 months out if possible. For Spring Break, it's likely many units have come and gone. You need an ongoing search for what you want and hope for the best.

This isn't true for some of the bigger companies like Westin & Marriott. You do not need to pay for your Maintenance fees to do your deposit in II. The two are not related. This might be the case for some of the smaller resorts but as a DVC member I don't think they would be happy with any resorts other than Marriotts and Westins. JMHO...

Hence "generally" and "many", instead of "all".

My point to the OP was only that s/he may need to be patient if this is an exchange s/he wants.
