I know that I should not be thinking of myself at a time like this (with the hurricane), but we are going to Destin, Florida in 12 days. I am wondering if anyone knows if I-10 is open through MS and Mobile Bay? If if is shut down due to damage, I need to map out a different way to go. Thanks for any info.

Even if it is open, they might not have power so filling up your car will be difficult. I would look at going on I20 and then going down once past the worst parts of the hurricane damage.

If I'm not mistaken, they showed parts of I-10 on the news last night and it had completely blown off the pylons into the bay. Don't take my word for that, though, but I'm pretty sure I remember them saying I-10.

Thanks so much!! I am going to research some other routes today!!

I-10 is definitely closed in some places. I don't know where exactly those places are, though.

It's probably a good idea to stay out of the southern parts of LA, MS, and AL for the next month or so. I think it's even bad in MS where I-20 goes through right now.

Even after they open the road, there are going to be a lot of people who evacuated trying to head back home.

I am in Baton Rouge. We faired well in the storm. DO NOT!! i repeat DO NOT!! attempt to go near the I-10 area from just past Baton Rouge through probably past Pensacola. They are using any available roadways and such to still evacuate people. As soon as the mission changes form rescue to recovery they will then start to clear out the bodies currently floating around parts of the city.

You should stil go on your vacation and enjoy yourselves. I would like for you to keep the Gulf Coast area in your thoughts and prayers. This catastrophy is on par with 9/11. It may even cause greater losses. Maybe not in lives lost but it will definately affect more households and cause more damages monetarily.

Don't mean to be too harsh....but what are you thinking....are you not watching the news?

Find another route...
I live in NYC area and in the days following 9/11 I had the common sense to leave the roads closest to the city to the emergency vehicles.....and 9/11 did not even involve evacuees and survivors in such dire straights as we are now seeing in the gulf region!!!

Sorry but I am just shocked by the scenes coming from that region and wish I could do more to help......

I agree find another route.

You can pay to join AAA and have them do a trip tik for you. They will give you the best possible detour.

I-20 through B'ham would probably be a better route. I wouldn't go anywhere near the Mobile or west area right now.

You might want to check with your resort, many of the beaches on the Florida panhandle were washed away with the storm.

We are leaving for Disney on Sept. 15th and we DO NOT plan on going our normal way which is I-10. We will be going through Birmingham, Atlanta and then down into Florida. Even if you can get through, gas is very limited and there are so many emergency personell using those roads.

Believe me I understand, I am looking so forward to Disney but then I feel guilty as well because of the tragedy. It really does make a difference when its closer to home.

I 20 is probably your best bet. 59 north to 20, and then east. probably adds 6-8 hours to the trip

Destin survived unharmed because that's where my in-laws are staying right now. They even took my 4yo niece to the pool at the hotel on Monday and Tuesday so it never got bad there.

I know that the hotels, homes, etc. were unscathed, but it's my understanding that much of the beaches along the panhandle and big bend totally washed away due to the strong surf.
