Is Fort Wilderness really that good???

It is that good - I am 37 yrs old and stayed in FW my first time at the age of 1 and every year since then - we now take turns one trip on property - one off, but I do love FW and so do my children! By the way rent the golf cart it is soooo worth the money - about $350 for a week - call the bike barn to make a reservation. We have our own golf cart now, but we rented one for many years. Many days my kids just want to go back to FW - there is sooo much to do! I love the surroundings - you can forget you are at Disney it is so peaceful after a day of heat and crowds!

People, PEOPLE!!! Are you a bunch of morans??? Telling this poor creature just how wonderful Fort Wilderness is? Why on earth would you wish to encourage anyone to stay there? The OP has the opportunity to stay at another resort for less $$$. They should certainly do that and stay away from a resort where you are subjected to encounters with gnats, mosquitoes, armadillo, bunnies, turkeys, otters, alligators, and other such wildlife. That is no vacation at all! If the OP wants to encounter wild game, they would have booked a safari in Africa.

I really suggest to book your vacation at the other resort. You may get a dining plan that is not available to Fort guests, and that would really sweeten the deal.

To regular Fort Fiends.... Shhhhhh....be vewy, vewy qwiyet! You have GOT to quit bragging up the Fort to everyone or we're NEVER going to be able to book a site.

Planning a family trip to WDW for Oct. 3-9. We all really love camping, but I'm just not 100% sold on the idea of spending such a big vacation this way. We've never camped more than 4 nights at a time. And now I'm realizing that I can rent DVC points and stay in a deluxe villa that time of year for just a about the same price as it will cost us to camp! It's so tempting to just go with the DVC rental. But FW sounds like such a blast!! Help!!!!

Everything FW has to offer is available to any guest at WDW, it's just that you are seconds or minutes away instead of having to drive to and from.

We have been DVC Members since '97 and FW Guests since early '80s. I do all the cooking and don't mind one bit doing so whether staying at FW in our MH or in a 1 Bedroom Villa or larger. I will say I prefer the much larger kitchen, full stove, oven and fridge, the King Size bed is verrrry comfortable, the whirlpool tub and very large bathroom :thumbsup2, the living area and dining area are both great, I also do the wash so the washer/dryer are great to have and relaxing on the balcony in AM or PM has it's pluses. Just a view from someone who does both.

Could you split the stay if you wanted to?

Enjoy your vacation which ever way you go.

We are now getting ready to make our 8th trip to the Fort in 20 days.

WOW! Eight trips in 20 days!? You couldn't get enough consecutive days, hunh?

Sorry, just hit me on the funny bone!

Like Shanman was saying....it just depends.
We loved the fort and it does spoil every other CG, and I wouldn't hesitate to camp there again.

But if you can stay at a DVC for less, perhaps even throw in free dining...that would probably push me to choose not to camp. Then we wouldn't have to tow for 3 days to get there.

But it's two entirely different types of vacation. You can't really compare them other than they have the parks in common.

So what kind of vacation do YOU want?

Again if you are talking tent/pup - I'd choose DVC, esp if you can wrangle free dining.

There is one reason why we will staying at the Fort for the 36 year. Atmospheramentifellowship
we have stayed else where and will never stray again

We're sorry, but 9 syllable words aren't allowed here. :lmao:

Yes it is that good! It is AWESOME! We don't want to stay anywhere else when coming to Disney. Last year we couldn't bring the motorhome due to health issues it was just too much to deal with. We got an awesome deal and stayed at the Yacht Club CL. While it was quite nice and we did have a good time we missed the Fort the whole time. We compared the CMs at the Fort and YC and the ones at the Fort are so much nicer. We took a trip over to the Fort so we could atleast see it. We have decided we won't go back unless we can go in our motorhome to the Fort! :thumbsup2

Ooooopppppssssssss! I forgot. No the Fort is awful. I wouldn't stay there if you paid me to. No way, no how! Yuck! Avoid it at all costs. :rotfl:

Maybe at the entrance to the fort it should have a sighn KEEP BACK 300 HUNDRED FEET! dis members welcome only! :rolleyes1

The Fort is wonderful.......we are going next month for a week and are not going to ANY parks! (We were there in October and did all four). We are going this time for my son to play in a baseball tournament at Wide World of Sports. He is 13 years old and asked...."Mom, do we have to go to the parks or when I'm not playing ball can we just hang out at the campground?" So yes, it's that good. You get the Disney quality without the "crowded" feeling. We will be there Spring Break and I wouldn't even consider it without the Fort.

Where in KY are you from? We live in Nicholasville. Just outside of Lexington! Do you tent camp or do you haul a camper all that way?

Just an FYI - the only way to get FREE dining with DVC is to rent through Disney for cash at full price and unfortunately that isn't cheaper than camping. (Wish it was!) However if you rent DVC points the dining plans can be added at full price. Enjoy you trip whichever you decide.

I love FW and own DVC, but today I found out that I'm not a real camper since I've only stayed in the cabins. Looking to set up a tent on someones back pad and share - lol!

Will be going to Fort Wilderness in July! :cool1::cool1:Just made our reservations. That also means there will be a notebook coming with me to take notes for a trip report.

Horrible place, that's why we've been going every year for the last 20 years! Stayed at the Boardwalk once and hated it. Have to sit on a hotel bed, can't be outside and you don't know who the last person was that slept in the bed or if the sheets are clean! Our 10 year old granddaughter would stay no where else. She's got plenty of other kids to play with and has made many friends over the years. Will take the Fort and my motorhome any day over a hotel room!
