Is DVC a good value beyond DVC Properties?

Hello. I will be joining the DVC soon and had a question about how members feel about the value of the club beyond the DVC properties. The investment obviously makes sense if you intend to stay at any of the eight DVC properties for a majority of your stays. However, after spending a good amount of time looking at the point charts for just about every other vacation option (WDW resorts, DL resorts, Disney Destinations, Disney Cruise Line, Disney Adventures, Concierge Collection, World Passport Collection, Adventurer Collection, etc.), I've come to the conclusion that I just don't see any real value in them. Essentially, you are better off just paying for these vacations in cash.

Just wondering if anyone else felt this way after taking a look through everything? Am I missing something here? Thanks.

The points needed for non-DVC resorts can be changed (raised) at any time and they have increased over time. When considering DVC "value" those should be considered as an option that provides variety but not one that provides cost savings.

Nothing worse than a educated DVCer. :)

The value of a point is how you want to figure it...
To start no it is not a good value but certianly an option...
If you figure the value of what you can rent a point for you will most likely lose out (I probably could say always but I do not knwo that to be true)
If you figure the value to be what you paid for the point -contarct price diveded by number of poinst divided by number of years you have and add the maintence fee associated with the pointyou are using-- you will most likely end up saving a few dollars even at discounted rates for most--remeber to ad tax to the cash price...
lastly if points are going to expire and you do not want to go to Dinsey or rent then it is a great option.
Always look at this as an option not a reason to buy and options are always good to have but as mentioned no of this is promised and can change at any time.

i purchased about a year ago and did all the crazy math to figure out the "value of..."

in the end my best estimate was:
1) you get a good value if you stay at the DVC properties
2) you get convenience if you use it for other hotels, disney cruise, disney adventure, etc.

it has been awhile, but i have seen several "tools / spreadsheets" that help you calculate the value.

I have never traded my points for another option... but you should also read about "ease of trade & availability"... there are many posting on the subject.
Cheers

We bought into DVC because we always end up at Disney World at least once per year, and we don't see that changing anytime soon.
We don't plan to use our points for anything other than the DVC resorts, so we found it to be a great deal!

While in theory there could be value beyond DVC, esp for certain II exchanges, the reality is no since the things that would return a good value are too unlikely to be available with any consistency to be worthwhile. There are special situations where one might find an exception but not many. DCL usually returns a value of less than $7 per point. DL is currently an exception but has been only a couple of years when they lowered the points there. I think it's likely they'll raise them over time but hope I'm wrong. And you might find a CC or similar where there would not be specials or discounts and using points is reasonable, but again that's not the general situation.
