I am a new DVC owner and love Disney of course.
Right now I have AMEX blue and Chase freedom both offer rewards and get paid off each month. I am debating on getting rid of chase freedom and replace it with Disney Visa. I use the Amex 90% of time but each year I put a few thousand on the chase.
Is their a huge benefit to owning a Disney visa or should I just stay where I am at?

Thanks Jim

It really depends... We use our disney visa for everything and save around 6-700 a year in Disney rewards. If we switched cards to another rewards card that offered cash back we could in theory earn more cash back but I know myself that I probably wouldn't put it in a designated Disney account, like the Disney rewards do automatically.

In my case, I like it. I have the one that charges a yearly fee. However, there are usually specials that cover the cost each year. The most current gives you a $50 bonus if you charge $2500 over a few month period. And the % return on purchases is higher.

In Feb, we stayed at SSR and used the points to by gifts, dinners, etc. We came home with $30 on the card. We can add more pts to card and use the card again in Nov when we go.

Plus there are other perks like discount on shopping, tours, etc. Depending on how much you charge each month, the pts add up between trips. My best guess would be about $15 per $1000 charged each month. Like any other card, paying off the balance each month is where the savings come in.

I'm a Premier member too- where did you find this deal for the extra $50 bonus. My bill is always over $2500 and haven't received this bonus

Although, I have one in my wallet, I would say "no". You can earn better rewards with other cards. One of the best cc's, at least, for rewards is the Chase Sapphire. The sign up bonus is equal to $500. I also think the Southwest Visa when it's giving 50k points is better especially if you fly.

Another option would be a card that allows the bonus to be put on the card as a statement credit. In this way, you could earn more rewards and still charge your Disney expenses on it. However, I too, like to have Mickey in my pocket. LOL.

I like the Disney Visa for the vacation financing. We've found it useful for "holding" cruises we were on the fence about. We can book a room we're considering without actually paying a deposit.

Same for land vacations. I'd rather pay the deposit later than sooner, keeping the cash in my account earning interest just in case I need it for something else.

Thanks all very good points. I guess for now I will stick with the AMEX and keep eye out for any other cards whose rewards might pop......

There are cards with better rewards, but few that make it so easy to get your rewards. We use to use our AAA card, which earned AAA gift certificates that we used to use towards Disney Tickets, but I had to go to the AAA store to purchase. It was a bit of a pain. With the Disney card I can just transfer the rewards to my rewards card right before our trip. I just which Disney would offer a higher % for Disney purchases without having a monthly fee, like most reward cards do.

I'm a huge advocate for the Paypal debit card. First off obviously no charging you spend what you have. Second 1% cash back which if I recall the Disney visa is only .5%. Anyway, they deposit it to your Paypal account each month. You don't have to transfer money to your Paypal account, it hooks to your bank account. This is also super safe as its much easier to fix if your card is stolen as opposed to your actual bank card. I had the my number stolen and the situation was fixed and money credited back in days!

The thing I like about my Disney Visa is that once I pay for my vacation, I already have rewards for my next vacation.

Since you are already a DVC owner, you already know you're going to have another vacation so you wouldn't need that extra incentive!!

I do have a Disney visa but I like it for the 0% for 6 mos for cruises or WDW packages. For my monthly bills (and pay off each month) I like the SWA Visa by Chase. We charge everything we buy on it & earn enough points for approximately 1-one way seat every 1.5 months, so a RT ticket approx every 3 months. We rarely have to buy airfare for all 4 of us. Even taking a few times per year usually 1 or both kids fly free. I have a tentative trip booked with point for Sept & didn't have to pay for any.

Obviously if you prefer to drive, this would be no value to you.

I find that overall the highest cost of a trip is the airfare so getting some relief in this area is a huge help.

I did just get the Capital One Venture card today since we're doing the Med cruise in Aug and they don't charge the 3% international purchase fee that my other cards charge. Their rewards work as a pp mentioned where you earn points and when you travel you simply put in a request to redeem points within 3 mos (IIRC) of the purchase going onto your card then they credit your account.

So I'm thinking if we wanted to redeem points for a Disney room-only res it would be possible. Of course you'd have to put in a request immediately upon returning home to get the credit applied ASAP otherwise you still have to pay for your room to prevent getting socked with interest then later enjoy the credit. So it's not quite like booking a room or flights for free (no output of cash) but still works out in our favor albeit a more roundabout way.

I will have to get some experience with this new card & see how it works out. No annual fee btw.

I agree with MinnieForMe. We don't use our Disney Visa too much because we get more valuable points with other cards like Southwest CC or another credit card we have we get gift cards as rewards.

Is there a reason why you would want to ditch the Chase Freedom instead of keeping it AND getting the Disney Visa? I'm only asking because neither the Chase Freedom Visa, nor the regular Chase Disney Visa, have an annual fee. But each one has its advantages that are unique to them.

The Disney Visa will get you some perks in the parks like the free character photo and discounts on shopping as well as the 6 months of 0% financing on vacation packages.

The Chase Freedom offers 5% back in specific spending categories every quarter (something that they haven't offered to regular Disney Visa cardholders since introducing their premium card). Those bonus categories really add up!

Maybe you could have both cards and switch between them based on whichever one gets you the better deal?

We use our Disney Visa for everything and pay in full each month. We have accumulated enough rewards dollars to pay for half of our Disneyland trip in December. To us, it is worth it.

Since this is budget board, I would say it is not. You can find better rewards cards without annual fee. I have the premier visa and will downgrade it next year. It is only used when we visit Disney.

I would agree, there are much better options out there.

I personally feel its worth it, as long as you're cognizant of the interest rates and pay in full before the promotional period ends. You're spending the money anyway; might as well get some of it back.

I agree. I have Chase Freedom and Chase Disney. The Freedom currently has 5% bonus on restaurants and Lowes and 1% on everything else. That can really add up.

Disney is pretty much 1% back all the time.
